Various questions about CarPC in a 2006 Ford Focus

I've been trying to do as much research as possible, and now I have a few questions.

My dashboard is identical to this:

I'd like to avoid moving the A/C controls and the DC outlet if possible, especially the A/C controls. I'm thinking removing the radio and replacing it with a 7" Touchscreen LCD. Would I have enough room to put a 7" LCD and a slim DVD drive under/above it? Would the DVD drive have to be an external USB drive in order to put it in the dashboard? If a DVD in the dash isn't an option, where is convenient another place it could be put?

I've looked to see if any people had put CarPCs in Ford Focuses newer than '03, since they changed the dashboard, but I haven't seen a single one.

    Looking for advice.

    Thanks.

That looks really similar and probably the exact same size as the new F150 and Mustang radio units... do some searches for 2005 or 2006 Mustangs builds here, there are some great and relatively easy builds for it like THIS ONE.

it looks like you can fit a 7" no problem where the radio is. if you want a slim line at the same place youll probably have to relocate or remove the lcd buttons.

just my .02 from what i see.

    You havent seen one? Psssh..

The "You AND Your Install" Pic Thread

That is mine. A 2005 Ford Focus ZX3.

You should just get the dimensions of your LCD (including case) and slot load DVD and measure your dash.

Assuming it wont fit w/o some moderate modification (which I believe) I would put the dvd in one of two places:

    1) There is a CD holder down and to the left of the steering wheel, it actually covers the fuse box
    2) There is a misc items holder below the grey bezel, but it might be too small.

Or you could put it in your glovebox... but then you'd have no where to put your mittens

PS I dont have a DVD drive... I dont see a purpose other than installing the OS ( I hooked my desktop's internal DVD rom to the PC for that )
