That's a smart approach. Congrats on actually taking the advice of the senior members before wasting money. Let us know how it all goes.

You'll need one hell of a fuse for that one...

i'm getting really confused abuot memory...the more i read the more complicated it seems to get. i was going to go cheap at first but it seems that people generally reccommend going with brand name ram, especially for mini itx comps. with the m10000, and m2 atx PS, i was planning on going with the kingston 512 in the mp3car store http://www.mp3car.com/store/product_...products_id=70

would this be a good choice? or does anyone reccommend anything else? looking to stay with 512mb, just trying to figure out which one would be decent. i don't believe it has to be the slim type, and it's not going into a standard itx case, so space is not an issue.

I have an M10k and M2ATX PS, and yes 512mb memory is about right for these PCs. Anything more is a waste as they usually run very few small apps at once. Anything less and you might end up waiting around more than you'd like. The MP3Car store is good for unique car pc parts but you'd be silly to pay 70 bucks for kingston ram. I buy all the parts I can from Newegg.com, here is a link to all their 512mb sticks sorted by price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ubCategory=147
Stick with a brand name like Crucial, Corsair or Kingston - they all pretty much use the same chips from the same manufacturer. I wouldn't get anything more than DDR400 either so you are looking at about 45 bucks plus shipping. Beats 70 from the MP3Car store. This means cheap AND you get a good brand name.
Oh and you don't need half height memory at least as I have it set up. If you are using a PCI riser card and plan on using the PCI slot you might need it - dunno. Take a look at my Ampie guide if you want more details - but I don't recommend the Ampie case due to space.

Some things I forgot to add to the grocery list that are very important:
    CABLES CABLES CABLES!
If you're planning on listening to audio through your car speakers, you're gonna need at least one amp to control the speakers. RCA cables to the amp, power, ground, remote wires. Depending on where you're mounting your carputer, you may need USB, VGA, power extension cables.
It's more than just the computer. Remember what connects it.

made the order today....the audio is going into my current pioneer cd player via aux in (i think i wrote that a couple times earlier)

    i ordered-

    -Bu-353 gps reciever w/ iguidance v3
    -kingston 512 mb ddr ram
    -6 ft. vga extension cable
    -slim dvd rom adapter
-pioneer k05 slot load slim dvd writer/RW
-6 ft 3.5mm male to RCA adapter
-pioneer aux in adapter (head unit doesn't have standard aux in, need adapter)
    -mini key USB keyboard
    -lilliput 7" TS
    -VIA M10k
    -M2-ATX PSU
-USB 10' extension cable (for GPS reciever if i need it)
    -western Digital 80GB HD 3.5"

u might ask "why a dvd burner in a car?" well, it wasn't much more than a dvd player and it might come in handy...i don't have a dvd writer in my house so if i need it i'll have it. no, i don't plan on burning dvd's on the way to the store haha.

now i think i'll just need a little longer IDE cable and make a power extension cable for the dvd writer...and anything i break.

fabrication of the dash pieces are almost done....lilliput housing is done, need to finish the second major piece (waiting like a week for ABS to solidify using solvent technique....which i must say sucks compared to other options...i just wanted to try it out.

well i guess we'll see how it goes...so far everything on the HD is going fine...i only have the HD and dvd writer right now until later this week though.

you aren't the first, and you definitely won't be the last.
