Initial questions for a Jetta install

    Hi all,

i'm brand new to the forums, but I've been lurking around reading up as much as I can. I'm extremely impressed with the knowledge of a lot of folks out there. I'm hoping I can count on you all to help me answer a few questions.

I have a 1999 Jetta TDI that I'd like to do on a budget. This means I'd prefer to not have to purchase a brand new computer if I can avoid it, which leads me to my first question...

    1. I have a Dell Latitude laptop with more than enough power (I believe) to handle music, GPS, cell phone connectivity, etc. I already have the docking station. So my plan is to install the docking station in the trunk unless there is a better location. Besides the inconvenience, is there anything to be gained by a standalone computer? Or, putting it another way, am I missing some crucial factor if I use a laptop?

    2. Assuming the answer to 1 is that a laptop is OK, are there scripts that folks know about that will launch an app (i.e. a dashboard) when the computer is docked?

    3. Does anyone with a similar Jetta (1999-2005) know whether or not the additional space above the head unit slot is large enough for a DIN motorized head unit like the one that Xenarc makes? Right now there is a felt lined little compartment there. I have not removed it, but the space looks a little short. However, I assume that this space would be used in a double din stereo install--I've just never seen one before.

    4. I don't necessarily need a motorized unit. In fact, in my mind I can visualize rails like are mounted to slide out drawers on the inside of the compartment above the stereo. Then I can imagine the stereo being mounter to the rails, sliding out, and popping up. It would look kind of cool. Does anyone know of any kind of install like this? I've only seen either HU style or embedded flat and permanent into the dash.

    5. Perhaps most important...I subscribe to URGE, and I carry my music into work, into my car, and into my house all on my laptop. I need to be able to use Windows Media Player with whatever dash system I use. It seems as though Winamp is the most popular choice. Do any dash systems use WMP or is it configurable to use it if you want to?

    OK, that's it for now.
    Thanks for your help!

    1. No, you're not missing anything and a laptop works just fine.
    2. Not that I know of.
    5. Use WMP. Nothing's stopping you. There are several front-ends that use WMP as a base if you want to go that route.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

That's a DIN sized cubby as well, it's the exact same size as the CD player. I suggest you search the worklog forum and look for other people who have installed in the same vehicle (there are a LOT of them out there btw):

    search: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/software-and-software-development/

to find out what the Front Ends are and what they use.

They are free to download and free to try (for the most part). Try it.

    Welcome btw!

    Thanks a ton

I'll check them all out. One more question, are there any shields or screens which can be added to touchscreens to prevent sunlight from washing them out quite so much? I probably don't need to worry about it too much in Seattle.

search around on the input devices forum, there's a new screen out that takes care of just what you are referring to. The thread also discusses why the screen costs what it does.
