    Getting parts

Hey, been reading the forums for a while now and I think I'm ready to install carputer! I've been building PCs for 4 years but never tried to put one in a car.

The parts I want to buy:
    1) VERSA-C7-1.5GHz Link to Mobo. I found a Jetway Brand with the same product code but does not state the speed, just says C7 CN700 (Link)
I heard that there are currently no drivers for the MPEG2/4 chipset decoder for WinXP, is this correct?
    2) picoPSU-120W DC-DC Link to PSU
Do I need a converter for this PSU (Don't know crap about electric stuff)? Does this have that ignition safe thingy or is it better just to go with the M2?
    3) 1GB DDR2 ram
    4) 40GB 2.5" HDD from old laptop
    5) DVD/CD-RW from old laptop
    6) Lilliput 7" 619GL (touchscreen)

    Any suggestions on different products?

I suggest not using the picoPSU because it requires you to also purchase a regulator to feed it stable 12v. For the cost of botht he picoPSU and a suitable regulator, you can get a full-featured DC ATX PSU (M2ATX, for example) that will regulate power, has a built-in startup controller, timed shutdown, etc.

1GB RAM is excessive in the car and will slow down the POST, meaning a longer wait when booting cold or resuming from hibernation.

Most people prefer a slot-load laptop drive because the trays in slimline tray-load drives are fragile. It's very likely you could snap the tray while loading a disc if you hit a bump or pothole. Also, a slot-load is a lot easier to integrate into a dash or some other location.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

    why 1 gig of ram?

and that Pico PSU doesn't regulate voltage, you'll need an add on piece to do that.

I'm getting 1GB of ram as the few added seconds of POST time isn't that big of deal. I'd rather have that than have hicups during audio/video/GPS stuff. Unless, of course, the BIOS on these boards are slow at initializing the RAM at POST (they have the award BIOS correct?).
I found a slim slot load DVD/CD-RW drive for $60 bucks. It's cheap so I'll most likely get that now.
As for the PSU, I guess I'll go with the M2-ATX since it has that boot/shutdown/engine crank safe stuff.

oh, also, does Curcuit City/Best Buy sell double din dash kits?

Thanks for the input! any other suggestions?

just a bracket that I want to mold the LCD screen to. then hopefully the mobo is small enough, fit it behind the LCD so its all in the headunit space.

*edit* basically I want to try to fit everything in the head unit slot if possible. the Scion tC has a double din slot with cover, the OEM HU sits about 1.5" back from the cover. Hopefullt if everything goes as planned, the cover will still be there to hide the LCD.

you can buy a dash kit, but you're going to have to fabricate to make the computer and monitor all fit.

I see a double din kit for my car on eBay for around 30.00+s/h. Is that a good price or is it better just to go pick one up at a shop?

I would think you could get it for about the same locally. Depeding on how much time is left in the auction you could just run up to one of the stores and ask them real quick. Don't mention ebay though, then they deffinately won't work with you on the price...
