    newbie car pc q's

    hey all

i am currently in the process of putting together my first car p.c
so far i have gathered these parts

Mini ITX VIA EPIA MII12000 Motherboard w/ Nemeiah 1 GHZ built in processor
    VOOM PC Car PC case
256 MB SD Ram ( maybe not enough)
    M2-ATX CAR PC power supply
    Black Mat****a DVD-RW
7' lilliput in dash single din touch screen. (in the next week or so)

and my dilema or question is this

i would like to add wirless internet and gps to complete the package.
but have no idea which ones will work best with the parts i currently have.
i will mainly use it for the gps and music ( obdII later on )

also the touch screen has an fm tuner built in so could i still listen to the radio or will i need a deck also.

any recomendations or suggestions would be much appreciated.

thanks for any help or advice you can give.

any wireless will work (external antenna would get you best reception, but a lot of people dont go external and still get good reception)
any gps will work, mind you a lot of people recommend the BU-353 (newest one, as i understand anyway)

not only do you need a gps antenna you will need map software. you have a few choices out there, but what i would suggest is you try out the different front end softwares available. then depending on which one you like, go with the best map program for that software. I use road runner with iguidance software. Street deck you can buy now from the store and it is a front end/gps program in 1.

As far as wifi. I use a wireless USB dongle. works fine.

FM built into your touch screen?

I'm guessing that it will just use the built in speaker to reproduce the sound?

if so, that's going to be poor quality for sure and not very loud.

Does it have any way to hook up to your PC and channel the sound through a PC?

the one i'm looking at is the 7' lilliput single din motorized touch screen from the store.( 469)

i was thinking i could hook it up to the audio for my car speakers.( as if i never had the car pc)

so the music will go from my cpu through the lilliput and then out to the speakers.

please don't laugh if this doesn't make sense.

this is the unit i would like to use

No its probably a motorized lilli thing, that looks like a HU when closed and plays AM/FM radio. It outputs either in RCA like a HU I believe. Then you will need some audio switcher to switch between radio and PC. Or do a temp hack job (Red is gonna like this one! ) use an inverse RCA splitter to take 2 RCA inputs into 1 and play only 1 at a time. That option, will introduce noise and is not a good fix, but it works.

I think he wants to use it as a backup so independant of PC incase it blows up or something!

so if i buy a deck and hook the lilliput's monitor up to the aux input for the deck i should need no switch and then get sound from the car speakers.

from what i have read is this the way most go?

ok i've got one more question.

my 7" lilliput motorized touch screen has a hook up on the back to run it like a head unit. ( power ground all 4 speakers)

so if i hook up the stock wiring to the screen then switch to vga mode for the cpu,( the vga lead has 2 rca's as well, these i will plug into the sound on my pc.)
this is what the bcak of the lilliput looks like

the harness plugs into the white plug and then into the car audio

will the sound go through the speakers when the lilliput is in vga mode.
here is the harness for the vga

the reason i am asking is because there don't seem to be any built in speakers on the lilliput.

thanks again for all your help

I'm only new to this but i thought why don't u take the outputs from your screen and feed them into your microphone/line in input on your mother board.
That way you will be able to control the volume and mute the microphone on the mother board.

Saves stuffing around with switches and hacking things.
It's easier taking things apart !!!
