    Handicapped Car Computer

I have been toying with the idea of a car computer for years now. I was recently in an accident and I now have a handicapped van. I have learned of people that drive with just one foot on a joystick. Now I want to adjust the car computer to fit the needs of a disabled person. These are people that would get real use out of it.

From my planning so far the most important things I have found are the voice recognition, front end software, and text to speach software. Since I am now limited in my abilities I am going to find a prebuilt system. I also plan to use a 10" touch screen in the dash, a track ball mouse, and a bluetooth keyboard. I will be interested in highspeed internet, and wifi hub, but I don't think it will be a priority for many other handicapped people. They will love the voice control of windows, climate control, locks, radio, navigation, etc.

I plan to be around here quite a bit. Once I get my first system down I will feel comfortable giving back that information to other newbies.

Best of luck. You'll be doing the handicapped community a real service if you can get it working. It will be quite a challenge. Most of the development here is hobby-related and not so ready for prime-time, much less special needs. This would be a nice offshoot to some of the systems that are built here now.

    Thanks!

I am not the normal hobbiest. I am on temporary leave from Full EFX Auto Techniques, www.fullefx-online.com. After 6 months I plan to take my prototype van and donate it to the Darious Goes West project. I also have a few connections in the handicapped customizing community to help me get the word out about the system. This year my prototype van and electric scooter will be entered in NOPI Nationals

    Thanks!

Does a $5k budget sound about right for my first system? All I have to pay for are the parts since I have 3 computer and 5 car guys working as my hands.

Again here is my list for that $5k:
-10" Touchscreen Monitor W/ AV in
    -Prebuilt CPU (Looking at Xenarc)
    -GPRS/Edge
    -WiFi Access Point
    -60G iPod
    -GPS
    -Back Up Camera
    -OS
    -Front End
    -Voice Recognition
    -Text to Speach
    -250G USB HD
-Printer (Scanner cartridge & Fax with software over ISP)
    -Track Ball Mouse
    -Bluetooth Keyboard
    -Infiniti 4x Amp
-Infiniti 6.5 Seperate speakers (2 pair)

the biggest concerns with what your talking about will be system redundancy... you can not have critical functions be totally dependent on the pc... also, the saftey issue comes into play..... what are the repercusions of a system falure or malfunction.... all of these things should be kept in mind while designing your interfaces... you want this to be an added convienence, not a potential headache...

maybe we can meet up then.

I plan on entering IASCA finals this year with my GTi.

What kind of van is it? Anything that would make it stand out from the outside?

I'm guessing that you are a rather young, inexperienced, naive individual...lol

It's a van that's been modified for someone who has limited mobility. Sometimes that someone is constrained to a wheelchair. As such, certain modifications must be made to adapt that that persons needs.

I'd suggest you get out more and grow up some while you're at it.
