You need to read this: FAQ: Will <insert PSU model> Power Supply work with my system?
hi. i am completely retarded when it comes to a carpc. i am very educated with computers and have built many. i noticed that a lot of people pick between a few different brands when it comes to motherboards. i was wondering if i would be able to use a micro atx motherboard. will that suck too much power? would i need a better power convertor? i would hopefully like this project done within 500-700. what kindof power convertor would i need for a setup like this..

You need to read this: FAQ: Will <insert PSU model> Power Supply work with my system?
well i was just trying to get some help...this is the newbie section for a reason. i did read and it does clear up somethings but yet there are still bits and pieces i dont understand..![]()
well, you have to read a lot before you can get started, to answer your question, yes you can use standard motherboards, such as ATX, and mATX, you have to be selective with processors though. the power supply for those components would be OPUS 140watt, you can purchase in mp3car.com store.
if you have an intermedia knowledge in pc, it should not be a problem for your to figure out how to assemble. what you have to figure out is power consumption, and since automotive environment is harsh you have to figure out right cooling, and you can read about it in the FAQ emporium great place to start.
So what are you waiting for, there is no spoonfeeding here, many people have feeling like explaining what computer is, and click mouse to 80 year-old grandma.
you may find a lot of members to be rude, but such is environment here gotta gain respect, and then help will come.

btw, i suggest looking, and completed project, and worklogs, when you might find something you are okay with, and work with that information.
Prepare to have a budget though, it will cost you at least 500.00 to start, depends where you get your components, also with the computer everything possible, watch your budget, otherwise you will start your own novel of how you got into credit card debt, think about everything before you start.
if you have any other questions, you are welcome to pm anytime

The link I provided is all about choosing a power supply, which was the nature of your querey. I even added a section at the end that specifically addresses your question about microATX (and other formfactor) motherboards.
We're not here to spoon-feed you and give you step-by-step instructions and a shopping list. Realistically, we can't do that, since it's your system to build. If you want to use someone else's recommendations, then let them purchase and build the system for you.
If you go that route, you'll likely be content with the system, but never "happy", as you'll be missing the satisfaction that you've completed a project and have something in your car that very few others have.
As stated above, the Show Off Your Project forum is an excellent source for inspiration and ideas. I haven't met anyone on this forum that doesn't enjoy talking up their system and how it was done to offer newbies guidance.
We recommend starting out in the Newbie FAQ. It's got links to other informational threads that have been compiled by other participants in this forum.
The other resource I'm going to point you to is the FAQ Emporium. It's more detailed and also more hodge-podge than the Newbie FAQ, but it's chock full of useful information.
So now you know where the information is. Go forth and make use of it.
My only suggestion is reading save you a lot of money and headache.
By that, you can make judgement what is the best component for your setup/need.

I think this guy is a lost cause....sounds more like he just wants someone to tell him what to get, much like the other newbie that came in here with the question "What is PSU?". Wasn't happy until someone just flat out told him what they used. Of course, they could have looked up that information themselves, but alas, they didn't seem to get that.
osteor10: you really need to learn to research if you're going to get into this hobby. Darque has provided you with PLENTY of links to get you started. I suggest you start there and come back with more SPECIFIC questions that prove to us that you've done your research.
