build spec and freefloating case in console idea... need help with case

here's what i've picked out so far plus i'd add a small(7-10") touchscreen lcd and an odbII reader to plug into my vehicle. the only software on this thing would be whichever gui interface for the touchscreen, the o/s, the odbII
software, gps software and use it as storage for mp3's. oh and a dc dc power unit. i'll completely remove the factory sound headunit and run the sound from this thru an amp then on to the speakers. all the hardware needs to be able to mount in my center console(in my ford explorer). Any suggestions,
    whatcha think?

i've noticed some of yall like to newb bash, so go ahead as long as there's some constructive criticim too...

    thx cheers

oh and for the console install i'll prolly come up with a lexan tray to mount the components in the center console...and i'm tryin to think up a way to suspend the tray in the console so that it will absorb some of the shock and reduce vibrations

any ideas on how to suspend? i like the idea of free floating the "case" with springs but then there's the issue of spring rate, ect. or mount it on rails running vertically thru the case with springs to suspend it off the bottom of the console. Any other ideas?

Well everyone has different need, and for what you are asking of this machine, I think this is a good fit. 1Gb of RAM may not be needed, but I (and I guess you too) are a believer in the whole "more RAM the better" motto.

It will slow your hibernate times, but not by that much. The gains everywhere else are worth it to me.

Also you have XP MCE in your cart too, but you know it is going to be bulky. Also if you don't already own XP, then Home will probably be fine for the car.

    Good Luck with your build

    No need to suspend it.

    Back again

after letting my plans fall to the wayside, I've started again. The link in post 1 is still good, but I added it again.

Lemme know whatcha think. I'm in a 95 accord and plan to put it either in the center console or in the dash. I'll be using a dc/dc converter and touchscreen, amps and new speakers in addition to the parts list I've linked. Give me some feedback on my parts selection and I hope to get to buying soon.

List looks pretty good. I actually added the sound card to my wish list, just in case the onboard isn't any good, or the one in my home computer fails. I am not exactly sure what you plan to use the Link Depot USB 2.0 adapter for?? If its for the slim drive I don't think it will work, but then again I am not fully up to date on the current interfaces and such that they use. I am planning on using the USB 2.0 slim enclosure they have listed here on the mp3car store, it is also available from newegg as well http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817708010 I fully agree on more ram being better too. What screen are you planning on using? and What powersupply are you going to go with?

I'm planning on the 7" lilliput from the store and one of the dc/dc powersources, also from the store.

I had misread the description of the Link Depot adapter. To connect the slot drive dvd i need to connect its IDE to SATA/PATA connection on the motherboard.

I wouldn't use that SATA/IDE conversion...just use the same drive type.

Also, be careful because any graphics card besides the onboard is going to eat up quite a few watts. Just make sure your power supply can handle it.

The CD rom drive you may want to go USB instead of IDE, but not necessary.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Anyone know of a slot type dvd drive with a SATA connection? Newegg isnt listing any.
