A few Ideas

Hey room

I'm looking into adding a carputer into my project car. now i was wondering if their more stuff to do with it other than nav, play music & movies ... like for example i would like to;

Turn the vehicle on and off with the touch screen. with out using the keys. also wondering if that "fingerprint identification security system" work on the touch screen like it does in laptops. ( I dont want my car to get jack )

also can i connect a cd changer directly to the carputer. I've try to google to see if anyone makes a cd changer with usb options.

is their a way to make a cam come on automaticly when you put the gear in reverse to see if anything is behind you.

and last idea, i've read around that you could connect a radar detector and laser jammer together with a navagation system to show a pin-point spot where the signal is comming from .... preaty much showing you were the speed traps and cops are at.

anyways thanks a bunch to anyone who read this. I know anything is possible ... i just want to know how to do it.

im sure I've just read on someones work log that they've created the interupter for the reverse/camera thing.

with regards to signals, if im not mistaken you need 2 points of reference to locate the position of a signal. You could however work out the direction, but again you'd need multiple receivers positioned to work out the angle of the signal. I may be wrong however

also, why would you like a cd changer linked to your pc? why not just rip all your cds to mp3??

Sony does... get this one and inverter...

Its called Sony VGP-XL1B2 and eats 200 discs, so sweet.

U can use it as batch burner too...

true that .... i didnt think about that when i type this idea down ... and for the radar thing ... yeah i keep looking into it ... and i guess they can tell direction but not exacly where at ... but thats better than nothing ... for the back up camera ... could i just connect the pc by jimmy rigging one of the keyboard keys to to the switch that turns on the white back up light when the reverse gear is in place and preaty much do the same for everything else that i want to replace from the dash board.

thats sony changer is sick ... thats exacly what i need for my house ... i got like 3 208 CD holder books full of music ... and not bootleg ether ... i got an 60gb ipod almost full, like 300+ albums ... 47gb of music. but it takes a while to download all of them into my Hard drive. thanks P3rv3rt B3ar

Wait, that is what u buy if u need to burn lot of stuff or need computer access to it... but if u just need to fill it with CDs or DVDs and play them get DVP-777ES. It takes 400 discs and u can still control it by computer trough RS-232 interface. Modyfying and importing those cost me a looot, but if u happen to live in US u can get one of those with lousy $450-500...

simpler way is to just pull the 12v power from the brake lights, some screens will automatically switch inputs if they detect a signal on one of the a/v lines

but if you want to use a webcam, then this simple idea doesnt really work

The fingerprint thing sounds pretty slick, but its going to be a good amount of work to get it functioning.

You will need a way to get your computer to wake up in practically no time, and have the wake up triggered by opening the door (so the computer gets a few seconds to wake up from standby or something while you sit in your seat) From there, I would have the software keep windows locked until it gets a thumbprint. When windows unlocks, your custom software detects the login event and triggers some kind of relay which runs the ignition for a few seconds.

The computer then needs to relock itself and go back on standby when your car looses power.

And you have to consider even if you do get all that going, what happens if the computer locks up or your cars engine dies? What do you do then?

In order to make all this security improvement practical you would need your computer secure (in a safe or padlock?) so you did not have access to whatever wires or interface it uses to start the car. (whats the use of a thumbprint scanner if a theif can just go hotwire the back of the computer case?)

Awesome concept, but sounds really hard to make reality.

with regard to your camera dont connect it to you barke lights if your screen does auto detect AV input it will come on every time you brake

If its a 12v supply wire it to you reverse light,
Then when you put your car in reverse it will power up and your screen should change to AV input
