what size hd? 2.5 or 3.5"?
Had to repost with new thread title...the video issue is not a issue anymore.
When I boot the computer, it checks the ram and then tries to detect IDE. IF I have my old laptop hd hooked up, I get no video. If I disconnect it, i get the ram check and then a reboot right as it says Detecting IDE.
I KNOW its hooked up correctly...I think![]()
The pin one part of the ribbon (single red wire) is connected to the pin one of the hd (by the 4 seperate pins).
Any ideas? The hd is old...but it did work when I took it out of the laptop. I hope I just crossed a wire or something

2.5
What type of IDE connector/convertor are you using?
I am using the cable that Casetronics sent me. If I have my terminology right, its teh 40 to 44 pin. It has a little 2 wire adapter for the power.
Sorry for the panic sound last night...it was just real disconcerting to have saved and waited this long to run into problems. I will try the normal stuff. Reseating the ram...disconnecting everything and see what I get. I did try disconnecting the optical as well. its when the hdd is attached that the problems arise. I will also try and strip a ps out of a computer I have around. The only problem is the power adapters if I can find those.
Thanks for the advise so far guys. I will keep trying. I can't get discouraged and quit now.

IIRC power should be fed to the pins closest to the jumper pins (the 4 that are separated). I had a cable like this hooked up to my hdd and it didn't let it power up either, had to use an adapter that took a 4pin power input (+12/GND +5/GND)
Ok. here is the status for those that have been helping me.
I reseated the memory
I did a "clean" start, meaning no hd or optical. I got past the detecting IDE and it stopped at the "Disk Boot Failure." I thought this was progress.
I dug out a ps from another computer. HOoked up the mb and the hd. It was not a power issue at this point, but the screen never showed anything.
I took a hd out of another computer (has 2000 installed on it.) and dropped it in and tried to boot. It did not find this hd, and so I went to bios. Could not get it to detect that drive.
Tried to start a xp home disk to get SOMETHING...nada.
I am at a loss...does it sound like a MB issue?
Possibly. make/model of the mobo? check for BIOS updates. What's your boot order in the bios? Make sure CD is before HDD, if it wasn't, try the xp boot cd again.
You got a bad cable. the 44 to 40 pin is bad. Need to get you a new one.
