Am I in over my head?

Here's my setup as it sits on my hot bench:

    - Morex 3677B Case
    - Mini-ITX VIA EPIA M10000 Motherboard
    - Embedded VIA C3 1Ghz CPU with Fan
    - 512MB PC3200 DDR Ram
    - Hitachi 30GB 2.5 Hard Drive
    - DVD/CDRW Slim Slot Load Drive
    - Creative USB Sound Card
    - OPUS 150W Power Supply
    - USB 4 port Hub

I disassembled everything so that could put everything into one case and delete the USB hub and SB card from my setup in lieu of PCI cards.

The system was picked up used, so I did not assemble it myself. I was not paying close attention as to what wires went where and now, I'm at loss. Unfortunately, I've lost the contact info of the person I purchased it from.

Things I'm sure I've got down:
    - Power to the mobo from the PSU was easy.
    - Just found the pin-outs for the front end power/reset/LED displays from the mobo.
    - System fan was also easy.
    - DVD/CD-RW drive is done.

Things I need help figuring out is:
    - Re-attaching the HD using the supplied ribbon cable. There are more pins than there are connectors on the HD. Not to mention the orientation.
    - Where do all the extra PSU power connectors go? There was some open connectors prior to disassembly, but I can't remember which ones were open and what goes to where?

I've searched broadly online for the last couple of hours now and could not find some level of instruction on figuring this all out. Mostly, it's for desktop computer stuff.

If someone could kindly please help me out here, this newb would really appreciate it.

On the brightside, packaging it all together was a snap.

    =)

You need one of these or one of these, most likely. Both perform the same function.

    Perhaps the manual might help.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

I have that cable already. I just don't remember how it attaches to the HD. On the HD side, there are a series of pin-outs, a gap, and another smaller set of pin-outs. I don't remember the orientation of the ribbon cable and which pin outs where used for data and which were for power.

If the cable is perfectly symmetrical (no blank or covered up pin holes) and both ends are the same, match up the side of the cable to the connector that is marked "PIN 1" or has an arrow/dot silkscreened to one of the corners of the connector.

Also, most cables have a single side of the ribbon that is colored - this denotes the "PIN 1" side other than the connector being keyed to prevent connecting it backwards (although this can still happen).

Okay, here's what I'm dealing with. Sorry for the crappy phone pics. I don't know what my wife did w/ our camera.

I figure that the large molex (??) connector connects to the one on the ribbon cable, but I don't know where the smaller one goes. That harness then goes to the PSU.

It's a little hard to tell from the pic, but the HD pins are not symetrical. The bottom row missing one pin. I have no idea where to connect the ribbon cable onto the HD for proper power/data connection.

Still searching for a solution. Hope you guys can help me out.

    Thanks again for your time.

I don't see an arrow or a dot, but there is a notch on one side of the pin outs.

    Is that the same thing?

The side with the red mark on the ribbon cable should be on the RIGHT side when plugged into the hard drive when looking at it from the rear, right side up.

Are you in over your head? Of course you are, but never fear. You'll get it put back right with the help of some of the forum members.

You might want to reference this thread in the FAQ Emporium: TIPS: Remembering how all the parts fit back together when hacking your electronics.

I saw that. Will definitely keep that in mind for future projects.

All the way FAR right past the gap including the 4 pins or just before the gap NOT including the 4 pins?
