    Cool Newbie Alert!!! Carputer virgin

I have been wanting to put a computer in my car for a while now. Well before i had the chance to do it in my 99 Mustang GT, i sold it. I had to put the pony out to pasture. Then i bought a brand new 2006 Dodge Ram Quad Cab. Now I have a whole heck of a lot of room to do what ever. Now i am new to carputers but not new to computers. so most of the actual computer stuff i will able to do, its just the intigrating into my truck is what is going to be hard. so i would like ANY input on this project of mine. it will be very apprciated. here is a list of what i plan on putting in my truck,

    1. A Micro ATX MoBo, pobably MSI P4M890M-L Socket T, it has intergrated 6.1 audio and video, plus i get to put in one of these fancey core 2 duo's

    2. Intel Core 2 Duo E6300, yea i am drulling at the thought of this in my truck.

    3. 512 MB ram, i will probably upgrade this later, i just need something to get the system going.

    4. A laptop Hard drive, i am thinking of the HITACHI Travelstar 7K100, 60Gb should be sufficent. also being in a truck the added anti-shock of a laptop hard drive will probably be helpful.

    5. Slim laptop DVD burner, you never know when you need to burn something.

    6. 7" 1-DIN flip-out Touchscreen. this is the cheaper alternative to modifying the entire dash.

    For sound,

    7. JL audio XR650-CSi 2-Way Component Systems, some very awesome componet speakers.

    8. JL audio 10W6v2-D4 Subwoofer, that thing should pound pretty well.

    9. JL audio 300/4 Class A/B Four-Channel Full-Range Amplifier, for the componets at all four corners of the truck.

    10. JL audio 500/1 Class D Monoblock Subwoofer Amplifier, to push the 10w6v2, that thing is going to pound hard.

That was a list of all the main componets, of course i am going to need a lot of little things, but that is the core system i want to go with. i have an estimated cost of about $3,000. sounds like a lot, but 75% of that is in the speakers, sub, and amps. I personaly will recommend JL audio to anyone and everyone. i have used there stuff for years now, and it just keeps getting better. well if you are still reading this ( which you are probably not) please comment back to me, i really want as much info as i can get, and what others think of the ideas going around in my crazy head.

    Thanks!!!!

I would recommended any nForce chipset AMD AM2 setup. Cost probably cheaper and much powerfull for our purpose. Search for "AM2" in the forum and you probably find something.
Instel is nice but may cost much more.

ya i was looking at AMD's new AM2 socket, but the intel Core 2 Duo is just smackin around even the AM2's. On every benchmark i have seen, the Duo beats down the AMD (CPU's w/ compariable prices), the new Core 2 Duo E6300 is only $183, and can overclock like a mofo.

Very cool sounding setup. Itll definately be powerful!

Only thing you didnt really mention was power. That CPU will use plenty, believe me.

Checkout the OPUS power supplies for high power stuff.

yea i am not totaly sure how i will set up the power for this sucker. the Intel has dramaticaly reduced there power consumption with the Core 2 Duo's. the e6300 is only clocked at 1.8Ghz. thats why i am using it. Thank you for your comment, i will check out the OPUS power supplies.

yea i really want to eventualy put in a transflective screen in. but the MP3cars flip out isn't out yet. i saw there proto type a few months ago. but it wasn't a flip out. maybe eventually i will mold in 10 incher into my dash, i meaured and it will fit!, but that is pretty expensive, and i want to get the system in and going before i decide to do something like that. Thanks for the Comment, and i definatlly what to use a transreflective screen.

Yea so i looked in to OPUS power supplies, looks like the 250 watt-er will be more than sufficent to run what i am thinking of runing. the core 2 duo's draw only 65 watts, i might change it up and go with the new Merom only draws 25 watts. what do you guys think, that means a different mobo too. also they are more expensive... well let me know what you think.

On another note, i am thinking about going with a slot loading dvd drive, and putting it im my dash below my proposed filpout TS. i will have to get some pics of what it currently looks like.

Id say go for it. 65 watts really isnt that much in the big scheme of things. That opus 250 will do 120 watts on the 12v, which will leave you plenty for an optical drive and hard drive.

Slot load in the dash is something I would really like, but dont have the room unfortunately. Again, Id say go for it, but its what I would spend the most time on to make it look just right.
