I'm new, a little too new!

I am very new to the modified car scene, and I came across your site while searching for fiberglass sub enclosures. Anyways, I was just reading the 'sticky’ for noobs on carputers. Now this my be a very very very obvious question, but apart from music and navigation what are the advantages to have a pc in your car????

Interfacing with OBD (on board diagnostics) and/or an ECU for programming your fuel injection.

Control windows, air suspension, HVAC and other systems from the PC.

Play movies as digital files instead of DVD discs for mobile entertainment, thus preserving your original discs.

Internet through a Wifi connection or cellphone carrier to have internet access wherever there is a signal.

Cool visualizations for your music that no headunit could come close to.

Play games in your car (really more for passenger entertainment) wihtout being limited to a specific console.

Basically, anything you can do with a PC at your desk, you could do on a PC in your ride. The possibilities really are endless.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

music, navigation, movies, telecommunication (internet messaging, phone, wifi) anything you can do with a computer at home...you can do in your car. gaming, car tuning if you get the right stuff.. You can hook anything you want up to it just like a regular computer, if that's how you build it.

music, video's, movies, navigation, internet, obdII, & many other practical things...

I'd say more than half those who have done it, have done so because they feel that a carpc can do everything that an expensive multimedia dedicated setup like alpine, kenwood, etc.. & come out cheaper with more functionality...

then theres the extras..... these extras can be as wild as your imagination & budget will allow....

    Car Tuning....thats amazing!!!

Does that al have to be linked with the cars ECU?

All sounds extremely hard.....i have experence with building my pc at home, but how hard is it to make the carputer controll your car. Hahahah computers are taking over!!

there are a lot of aftermarket ECU's available...Hydra is one of the companies off the top of my head. Mostly the car monitoring/tuning is done through the ODBII port using a serial adapter to the PC. Yah, Personal Computing left the dektop and laps a long time ago.
