The reason they call one 479 is so that people can easily pair them. the two 478 sockets (478, 479) look almost all the same. original 478 has the two pins missing on the corner. Like this:

And 478 version two (a.k.a. 479) it has it on a diagonal like this:

    They are NOT compatable whatsoever.

For the new core2 duos, all the ones I have seen and used have been based off the LGA775 socket which has the two "dimples" on it. Like this:

LGA775 has no pins. go figure!

Thank you for the information. i am looking into the Core 2 Duo Moble (merom) or the Core 2 Duo Desktop (conroe). i know that base on that website that the t5500 that newegg.com is selling is the 478 pin variant. i only found 2 micro atx boards on newegg that supported that, do you know of any?

Well it is still relatively new and it is not usually used in desktop systems which is what the "ATX" standard line is for. Usually laptops have these hence the mobile. So they are all proprietary boards. You might be able to find a used laptop mobo on eBay but considering they are less than a year old, you might have troubles. My reccommendation is to use the lga775 version of the chip (Conroe). The power consumption is about the same for speed.

    More options too.

Here is an itx board that supports the Core Duo Memron: http://www.commell.com.tw/product/SBC/LV-677.HTM

Make note that it is the Core Duo, not the Core 2 Duo.
