Just because a USB hub doesn't have external power doesn't mean it can power everything you plug into it.
Only so much current is carried on a single USB line.
If you plug one thing into that hub that requires all of the current that a single USB line can provide, then what happens when you plug the next piece in that needs just a little power?
That's where the powered USB hubs come into play.
Electricity isn't some magically generated thing, you have to provide it when it's needed otherwise things won't work correctly.
Most of the items you have listed don't appear to be very power hungry, and if they are they will probably have their own power adapter (USB sound card and DVD burner for examples).
Just keep it in mind if you start to run into issues with things not working.
