I would also strongly recommend that you power your USB hubs.
Not sure why, but a friend of mine fried the USB port on his laptop by attaching a non-powered hub with a few things on it. You would think that the devices would simply not have worked, but that would have been too easy....
He ended up replacing the laptop because it was the only USB port on it and a new motherboard would have cost more than a decent laptop.
