My 1st. System. What do you think?

I'm planning on this for my 1st system. Been reading on here a bit and i'v always wanted to do this ever since i got my 1st car. I now have a large media collection and want to take it with me in my car.

so here is what i'm planning on buying at the moment...

    Jon's CarPuter:
    Hard Drive: 500g sata $170
    Memory: 1g pc-3200 DDR $110
MotherBoard and CPU: On Board 10/100 LAN, 6-channel Audio, Integrated Video, and a AMD 64 3000 754 $100
    DVD/CD Drive: Burns dvds+-r @ 16x52x32 external USB Thin $75
    Wireless B/G: usb dongle $20
    BlueTooth: usb dongle $15
    Screen: Lilliput 7" In-Dash Motorized Touchscreen $460
GPS: USB Weatherproof GPS antenna $75
    Power supply: opus 250w $200
    Total: $1225

I have a bunch of 8awg with a fuse holder i'll use to give the Opus power.
The CD/DVD burner will sit in my glovebox, as will a mini wireless keyboard but i can't find any! suggestions?

Is there anything i'm missing or i should watchout for?
Is using the onboard sound ok? would i notice a difference if i used a high end soundblaster add in card?
also Is it worth buying a digital to analog converter like this one?

only thing holding me up is a box to hold it all. i guess i'll figure that out when i get to the install...

the puter will feed my Eclipse CD5000 with a signal at the end of the day which will goto the rest of my upgraded sound system.

Edit: oh can i use this with that lilput monitor?

well, for my first system i'm going with just a 7 inch screen and old laptop on power inverter. obviously there is a better way to power it but this way my spendings are gradual since i already have the laptop and the inverter. next step would be opus 120 powering P3 system i already have. will see where it takes me from there.

as far as your setup seems you going with relativeley powerful systetm. as for your question i read it is the xenark monitors that switch to video input upon signal automaticly. don't have experience myself with it yet though

It is a bit powerful but it's not that expensive and i worry that i will run out of resources on it still... XP prof. w/ GPS software, Winamp w/ visulizations running, Roadrunner, etc. if i use a program to load my entire database of over 300gigs of mp3s things slow down big time. i just never want to have to deal with ANY slowdown what so over. the actually cpu is only 200 mb,cpu, mem it's all the power and monitor that add the price up so quick. and a 500g is mandatory 300gigs mp3s 200gigs movies/tvshows...thanks for your thoughts!

i'm mainly worried about SQL now. and finding a damn skin for roadrunner that doesn't suck.

dunno, my second comp (which will eventually go under the passenger seat) is P3 with 256Mb running XP pro and it is playing MP3's just fine. I cant imagine that MS streets is that CPU intensive either. i think it is just a matter of optimising the OS...

it's only 210 for the mb, cpu, and mem. i figure i'll never have to upgrade again. only to a bigger HD. everything else is just accessories which adds up to way more then the core system. i don't understand why everyone uses such slow systems, other then size of course. but i should be able to hide it easily once it's installed into a custom made box. i do pay more in terms of a PS...don't you think gps software, mp3s, and a movie would be alot to run at once?

don't get me wrong, i'm not critisising your setup. it's just you and me have different priorities and approaches. my priority is minimise spending AND keep them gradual. this way the wife will stay happier. but 210$ is sertainley not a bad price for cpu/mb/ram.

as far as preformance chances are that if you are (the passanger actually )watching a movie , you are not going to play MP3's , or watch a movie when you hear music. to tell the truth i'm not sure how cpu intencive running MS streets (or other software ) with GPS active but again, i cant imagine it being very intensive. so far my desktop does that just fine .

also you need to remember that your alternator does not produce unlimited ammount of power. imagine running air conditioning, wipers, driving lights, defroster and stereo at once - can happen on cold rainy evening. the car is not going to like you to much if you connect power hungry machine on top of everything else. thats anther reason why people choose slower machines. how much extra wattage can your alternator produce? consider - my bike's alternator produces extra 5-10Watt then peak consumption. it is probably different for the car , but i'm sure the car makers didn't plan for people running PC's in their car, so we are just tapping from the reserves they put there.

    1. 30 views isn't ****.
    2. Nobody is required to comment on anyone's proposed system specs.
    3. You have an overpowered system, although the setup should work fine with the hardware you've proposed.
    4. You can save a few bucks on the GPS receiver by going with a different vendor. I've seen new ones as low as $60.
    5. I suggest a slot-load DVD burner. The first time that tray snaps when you're loading a disc while mobile, you'll wish you'd gotten a slot-load.
    6. As a general rule, in-dash screens suck. I was going to go with one initially, but too many people have had too many reliability issues. That and even the best installs of them look like ****.
    7. Use a wired keyboard. The first time you need to troubleshoot your PC or change something in the BIOS, you'll be glad you've got a wired keyboard.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?
