Post Newbie CarPC equipment list review

    Hey everyone,

Glad to finally be a part of this board, and working on my own project. So, I am building a carpc, and I have decided to try and use some equipment that I have just lying around. Please, let me know what you think.

Asus Motherboard with AMD Sempron 2.0Ghz processor
    1 GB of Ram
    Generic 128MB Nvidia GeForce 5200
Generic CD/DVD mounted in glovebox or dash
80 GB 3.5" Seagate Hard Drive
Opus 250 watt DC-DC PSU with Startup/Shutdown Controller
Lilli 7" in dash touch screen monitor
2 Lilli 7" monitors in headrests

I am planning on mounting the motherboard and related equipment in the spacious glovebox generously provided by BMW. I know that it is a full sized board, but I currently have it in a case with a 300w ps and it runs perfectly fine with several other components attached running at the limit of it's capability. So I am thinking that the Opus psu will be fine. Any comments on what I have got so far? I will probably purchase the psu soon and start installing in a couple weeks unless I'm way off base here and need to buy different parts. Thanks for all the help.

    Jason

make sure you go through the power calculator to double check you're not overpowering the PSU.

Also, are you not going to add GPS to this system? Might start looking into the antenna and various software packages out there.

not just an overall power calculator, but you need to look at each rail on the PSU to make sure you aren't over loading any one rail on the PSU.

I have to ask how you are expecting to keep that beast cooled? Why a full size board? I just can't imagine what you would need it for, how you're going to fit it (with fan, connections, etc), how you're going to power it, how you're going to cool it, etc.

Pick up a mini-itx board or micro-atx board that will use what you have. Why the need for an additional video card as well? When going with these larger boards, the video seems to be a bit better than the mini-itx boards...

I am just trying to use pieces and parts that I have around instead of spending a fortune. I found the opus 250 watt power supply, I am thinking that should be enough. My car has a good sized glove box, I plan on mounting it all in the glove box, and the cpu has a fan on it to keep it cool... The video card has a small fan on it, and I will custom enclose the glove box to have a couple cooling fans as well... I want the video card for good graphics performance during DVD playback for road trips with the kids. This is only a Pentium Celeron equivalint, so I can't imagine that it will use too much power. The psu in it right now is 300 watts, and it has all kinds of extra stuff hooked up to it. Fans, extra hard drives, ect, and runs great. Yes, I plan on having GPS, Wifi, and all that, but I wanted to get the basic system up and running before I added extras.

oh, one thing I noticed, how are you getting sound to the speakers? Do you have amps in your car? Are you going to relocate the HU?

ps. you got a coupe or sedan? Just a fellow e30'er wondering if you got any pics of your ride.

I will run out of the pc into the aux in on my head unit. The head unit is getting relocated. From the head unit, I will have four tweeters running off of the deck itself, four 6x9's running off of a 4ch amp, and two 10's running off of a 500w amp. So, does this look possible with a good startup controller and screen, or will I have to buy the mini parts? There is plenty of space in my car for the full size stuff, but I want to make sure it will stay cool, and that I should have little problem running it.

PS. My car is a 1989 BMW 325i 2dr. 2.5l 5sp, red exterior and black inside

chances are those 6x9s are at least 2 ways, so you will have 8 tweeters in your car. There is absolutely no point to that. Not in the least. Ditch the tweeters and run with the rest. That is unless all you like are highs and bass.

Be sure to post your work log when you start it.
