    critique my hardware/ expectations please

hey all, long time lurker...lots of awesome installs and good info here.. looking to build my first car pc , platform is a 96 s-10 blazer, then a new ridgeline as soon as i get it.. let me know what you all think of this setup:

what i want the pc to do: everything.. nav, bluetooth phone, voice commands, sirius, surround sound, wi-fi, dvd, mp3, xbox, ipod, back up camera, steering wheel controls, interior and undercar neon, obd2, fm radio, a/c controls, and probably some stuff i haven't thought of yet..

the budget: not unlimited, but i figure that the honda nav is 2k, so that's sort of my starting point..

    Mp3car Custom Dual Core CarPC(3688)
    Motherboard

Intel Motherboard*: Ibase MB899 Dual Core Motherboard MB899F Dual Core Motherboard w/ 1394

Processor*: Intel Core Duo T2400 1.83GHz

    Memory 2GB(2x1GB) DDR2 RAM

    Operating System: WinXP Pro

    Monitor:

don't know yet, i think i want a transreflective 7", but as the blazer is going to be a test install, maybe just a plain 6" then go 10" in the ridge, pending measurements to see what fits, i'd also like one without buttons anywhere, so the install looks factory

    CD/DVD Drive:

i'd like one in the pc, and a slot load in the dash.. is it possible to extend a ribbon cable that far? or i've seen some smaller round cables on hard drives for data transfer (sata? can't remember the name right now)

WiFi Adapters: Linksys USB Wireless G

    Bluetooth: Linksys USB Bluetooth

Sound: Advantage Roadie 7.1 USB Externall Surround Sound

startup controller: CarPC Pro v2.5d - The Advanced ATX Power Controller

front end: roadrunner or street deck? it seems rr has more apps for guages, power out to relays, obdII stuff, etc..

input device: i'd like a knob, touchpad, or remote or something to control all functions as an alternate to using the touchscreen (for passengers)

i'd also like the capability to to additional monitors w/ different inputs.. eg: p/c, xbox, cameras, etc.. and to be able to use these functions on the main screen as well

i plan on adding a second battery (optima yellow top) and a remote starter (controlled by the pc?) so if the voltage gets too low it will keep the batts charged..

thanks in advance for any advice.. i've read the faq's and newby stuff, but i don't want to rush out and purchase a whole pile of stuff and find out it's not what i want..

Rather than try to run ribbon cable that far, just hack an external USB drive encloser. USB will be slower on data transfer but more than fast enough for "normal" use. Will also gove you many more options on how far away you can mount it.

Just get an external case for the one up front (why you need 2 drives though is lost on me).

The case will require USB and power. Slide the drive into the case, mount the case and you're done.

front end: roadrunner or street deck? it seems rr has more apps for guages, power out to relays, obdII stuff, etc..
The wonderful thing about this forum is that they all exist here. Test out RR and test out StreetDeck. The support for both is great. They are different applications built for different reasons but to achieve the same goals. Useability is a big thing so don't just compare feature lists.

input device: i'd like a knob, touchpad, or remote or something to control all functions as an alternate to using the touchscreen (for passengers)
You will need to research that. There are a lot of options out there and only you will know what fits your install best.

i'd also like the capability to to additional monitors w/ different inputs.. eg: p/c, xbox, cameras, etc.. and to be able to use these functions on the main screen as well
Most of the monitors offered have 3 input options. VGA, AV1, AV2. Most use the VGA for the computer, AV1 for backup camera, and AV2....for anything else? console system perhaps? As for being able to use them all on all of the screens? You will need a video splitter for that. Then you will also need a switcher to determine what screen gets what at what point. Before you atempt any of this...I'd tackle the PC first and get it figured out.

i plan on adding a second battery (optima yellow top) and a remote starter (controlled by the pc?) so if the voltage gets too low it will keep the batts charged..
How would remote start keep the battery charged? I would deffinately NOT try and wire it up so that when the voltage gets low the remote start kicks on. You can loose hands and all kinds of other things with it like that. If you're adding a second battery it sounds like you're wanting to run all of this with the car off for extended periods of time? I'd consider how long that will be for and consider an alternative if it's going to be for a few hours at a time.

thanks in advance for any advice.. i've read the faq's and newby stuff, but i don't want to rush out and purchase a whole pile of stuff and find out it's not what i want..
Then stop your planning now. You really should get the pits for the PC now and just work on that. Have the plans for everything else still but for not put them all on the back burner. Get the PC up and running without hitch THEN take on the rest of it. It won't be so overwhelming then and to boot, you will only have one project going at a time.

    Welcome to the forums btw!

    thanks for the replies..

thelgord: good idea on usb, would that be fast enough data transfer for dvd playback?

red: the reason for 2 drives is just in case the nav needs a dvd to run (like factory systems), and i'd like to be able to play a cd/dvd without going to the pc box. can you point me in the direction for the case?

the second battery will be for extended run times, i;ll have to check the power requirements of all the electronics and see how long i can run for, it may be on an isolator so if i kill the main i can still get home.. lol as for the r/s if i needed it it would start automatically, but i had the same system in my old dodge and it would beep the horn and flash the lights for several seconds before it started

    Then stop your planning now.
the reason for planning all this out in advance is to know how much physical space i'm going to need, as the real vehicle has very limited room.. and what components to get first (obviously the pc and monitor)... but i also need to mount the amps, get all the power/ switching wiring done, dynamat, change the speakers and associated wiring, upgrade the battery/ charging system and wiring, subwoofer enclosure.. etc

all that will mean completely removing the interior of the vehicle. i'd like to only do that once if possible

i'm going to try and head out to a meet one of these days, and see some systems up close, i can handle the hardware/ assembly, but the software and fabrication are my trouble spots.. i can do the basic installs, but i want to make the whole system completely hidden, appear stock, and be a seamless integration... the ultimate would be to have a honda sales person or tech to go "when did honda make a car computer?"

thanks for the help tho.. back to searching the forums.. lol

I'm not aware of a single PC based navi system that requires the CD to run.

Mount the CD drive in the dash and leave it at that....that's what most people do. No need for a drive up front AND out back.

The enclosures can be found all over the place. I found this just from a quick google search for External Slim CD Enclosure.

as for the r/s if i needed it it would start automatically, but i had the same system in my old dodge and it would beep the horn and flash the lights for several seconds before it started
I sincerely advise against this. Having remote start on both of our vehicles and working on these vehicles ourselves, having a remote starter that starts the car without the push of a button on a signal that voltage is getting low can be very dangerous.
