    Hello, Noob with a Tacoma

    Hello All,

I have been lurking around the mp3Car forums since about November of 2006 and finally decided to sign up and get involved.

I have my CarPuter up and running and I am about to install it into my truck. I'm hoping, if all goes well, that the actual install will start this weekend.

I started with an interest in upgrading my entire stereo system in my 2001 Tacoma. It is a little over six years old and I decided that I would still keep it around for a while. It only has 65,000 miles on it and it is still running strong. I initially looked int putting an Alpine system in it with the navigation, CD changer, DVD playback and, most important, the ability to play my large collection of mp3s. I like Alpine because that is what I had in my vehicle before my Tacoma.

I started pricing the entire system and came to the conclusion that it was just going to be way too expensive. Besides, how was I going to have all of my mp3s at my fingertips and eliminate the need to carry a whole book of CDs in my truck?

Then it dawned on me; I remember a website, some eight or so years ago, where someone was building a head unit that you could store a very large number of mp3s on it. In fact, I think it was this very website where the development was logged. This is where I got my idea that I can build my own system and have it meet all of my requirements.

In December of 2006, I finally pulled the trigger and started buying all of the components I needed. I have plenty of experience building my own PCs and I have also done all of my own car audio installs. Well, actually, I've only done two car audio installs. I have a lot more experience with building computers. I have never taken on a project this large or this aggressive.

I have been working on the PC build since mid-December. I probably could have finished that part alot sooner but my wife would never forgive me if I didn't show my face for a couple of months. Besides, I need a little quality time with my 1yo son to keep my sanity.

I've put my PC configuration in my profile, so you can see it there. And, yes, I am running Vista on my puter. I have found that a few items were a little trickey to configure properly but everything is running smooth now. I also found that StreetDeck also runs very nice under Vista. The only item that doesn't really work right is the software volume control. But then, I don't really trust software control of the volume with a 1000W+ stereo in my truck. That's where the Alpine PXH-701, which comes in the mail today, comes into play. Yes, the sound quality is also important to me.

I have found that over the past several months of lurking around the mp3Car forums, I can find an answer to just about any question that I have had regarding my install. Thank you to all of the regular posters here. You have answered so many of my questions and you didn't even know it. It also encouraged me to push what I could do with my system beyond what I originally thought I could do.

BTW, it seems that a certain National Sales Engineer lives just up the road from me here in North Texas.

Well, wish me luck. That hardware is going into my truck soon. I'll see if I can get some picture later. Maybe even post it into the worklog forum. With a little extra blood, sweat and tears, I might have the whole system in by the end of March. Heh, we'll see.

Good luck with the install. How are you going to keep your system cool? I understand it gets a little warm in Texas in summer.

I thought about that. The reason I went with the Core2 Duo Mobile processor is because they don't generate nearly as much heat as their P4 predecessors. I have plenty of ventilation on the system. It does get hot in my truck when it's parked but I don't expect to be using the system while sitting in a hot truck. You just don't get into a car without it running or at least some air moving during the summer here. When running, the AC works really good, even when it's over 100 here.

I guess I'm not real worried about the heat. Now if you want to talk about the humidity, that worries me a little more.

Darque, I love my Taco. I'm on my second helping.

Oh, and Red, I've seen your sig. I was referring to you when I said I live up the road from the "National Sales Engineer". I take it the next meet hasn't been set up yet? I'd like to try to make one, once I at least have my puter put in my truck.

    hehe - yeup - that's me.

Doesn't matter if you have the puter in your truck yet...should come on out anyways!

Once someone steps up to the plate to set-up the next meeting...then...well...it will be set-up...

I've set-up the others and would like someone else to take some initiative...

Can I at least wash my truck first? Oh wait, it's a Tacoma, it supposed to look dirty.

Since I'm new around the forum, I don't think that I'm the man to set one up. I'll keep an eye on the thread though.
