    Engine support

    Hi there

Just found this forum - seems to be a lot more happening on here than on the mailing list.

    I have one of these:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/GlobalSat-BU...0732308&sr=8-1

    And one of these:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/DIAGNOSTIC-R.../ref=pd_ybh_25
    (I think)

I don't have access to the engine I wish to be logging, and I also haven't built the PC which I will be using (it will be fedora 17 32 bit)

From what I've read the above are both supported devices and I shouldn't have any issues with them.

    How generic/specific a given engine's OBD dialogue is ?
Does it matter what engine this software talks to ?
Do manufacturers faithfully use the same codes for all of their engines ?

    Thanks

    Gavin.

NO. Assuming you mean Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
Beside the mistakes and misunderstandings the P1xxx codes are free and may even differ per model year.

If you want to do some logging I recently found some decent software. They have a lite version and a 7 day trial of the paid version. It's called OBD 2007.

I take it since you're posting for different software on a board about gps/obd logging software, that you have tried OBDII GPS logger out and found it wanting ?
Please share why you feel that way (or is this just a blatant advertising post)

I also note that your link has "OBD for PC". I assume you only mean windows. I am looking at OBDII GPS logger specificially because it runs on linux.

No, I am not advertising anything I am just sharing a link. If you look at my other posts on this forum you could probably figure that out. I was just trying to help. I seen the title as "Engine Support." so I linked a program that gives engine data logging. I am sorry if I misread your post, and the app I use to read this forum does not make it easy to tell what category it is listed under.

I am planning a pc install and I am into modifying cars that is why I want this software. So, instead of blatantly insulting people just ignore a post that is not helpful. All posts on this forum are reviewed by a moderator, as it states each time you post, so if there was an issue they would have removed my post.

I did not insult you. Do you feel I should have spent time looking at all of your prior posts to verify that you do not have an interest in the linked software ? Errr....

You gave you no reason to tell me why you feel OBDII GPS Logger is not up to snuff, you simply linked something else without saying why.
Surely you know how often people use discussion forums for promoting their stuff.

When you referred to the alternative as 'decent' it suggests you've tried it and found it wanting.
You still haven't told me why you don't think OBDII GPS Logger is no good.
Does the software you linked run on linux ?

I am not into modifying cars, but I AM into doing things with linux.

From the picture the OBD cable looks like the one I have and it uses the same chip that is in mine. It may even come with the free version of OBD 2007. If it is the same it works fine. It's just got a different name. If you are wanting to use it just for check engine lights it should work fine.

I do not know anything about the GPS cable.
