My pager alarm from 1988 worked pretty well actually.
It had a 1/4 mile range.
Check out this one:

Although the vendor doesn't have them now so it seams, I bet you can find it elsewhere...

It's suprising how simple many expensive items can be. As long as you adjust the circuit to the same voltage as your phone charger it should be fine. Usually any circuits to limit the battery charging current will be inside the phone, so all you need to do is make a power supply the same voltage as the phone charger. Anyhow it worked for me.
Best regards,
Matthew

Thatcham
I'm not sure if Thamchum exist in the US, but if they do it's worth keeping an eye out for them. They don't make alarms rather they are a standard, or govening body for alarms. If you get one which is Thatchum approved then it's serious good, and nearlly all insurance companies (well the ones in the UK) will give you money of if you've got a Thatchum Alarm.
On the down side they have to be fitted by an authoriesed fitter, you can't just go into the shop and by on, and they tend to be expensive. But if you plan to keep the car for a long time they should pay for themselves in insurance savings.
Also talk to your insurance company, they will almost definately, recemend a few alarms, after all they don't want your car to be stolen any more than you do.
And you say people actually pay money for M$ Windows?

anyways.. retail.. expect about $1000 for the alarm installed.
Luckily, i used to be an installer, and bought the alarm from my old work for $300 and did the install myself.... and yes, it was a pain.
I'm also an installer. I also bought the AG4. I got mine from another installer who cant install it in his own car. I got it off of him for $230 with Cliffnet Wizard Pro for my car computer. You're right. It is a pain to install. I also installed smartwindows4 and made my own channel expansion from the factory 3 outputs to 12 outputs to remotely roll the windows up and down, pop open 2 doors, turn on the fans for the computer, turn on the computer and turn on and off the radio. Tell you the truth, I'm not a Clifford guy. Infact, I hate clifford. I have alot of problems with my setup. The remote start doesnt always start the first time and yes I got the right tach wire. Most of the time it takes 2 tries. The windows dont roll all the way up up on arming. It stops half way. It works perfectly rolling up with the door switches. I have to use the aux outs to roll it all the way up. I'm totally into DEI alarms because it works like what a car alarm should work. The reason I got my Clifford is the price and the fact that I can use my car comp to control it, monitor it, and program it in GUI. too bad DEI alarms can't do that (DEI PC interface is DOS based and only for programming) My next project is how to get .25 second or .5 second pulse output from the AUX channels. The factory setting is 1 second pulse. That's the fastest time for the AUX out. I tried the timer relay but those also have 1 sec output. So anyone out there who knows how to cut the AUX out from full 1 sec down to 1/4 or 1/2 second please let me know.

That's one of the reasons I din't get the Clifford in the end, that and trying to physically fit a Clifford in a Mini. I havn't got electric windows and central looking yet but it's on the cards to go in over the winter, all the wiring for them was put inplace when my alarm was installed, just a case of buying the motors and fitting them in, more money to spend

You can but specialist realy boxes to do this kind of thing, I know Wood & Pickett sell them, but they're a rather expensive custom / coachbuilt Mini dealer in the UK.
Alternativally, you can save your self a few quid and build one your self using a 555 timer and a realy, which is probably what I'll do (it takes a go 10secs for my roof to close).
If you look at:

If you need a hand let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.
