    What a fun day...

So I get to work at 5:30 this morning, like I usually do...

For those that aren't in the know, I'm not at the help desk of a public utility. So it's another day of rebuilding Outlook profiles and pointing users to web-based forms to request access to this, that and the other, right...

    WRONG...

I get told upon walking into the area that our Oracle database took a major dump yesterday afternoon during a scheduled server move. Apparently, there is nearly 2 terabytes of data that is in the process of being restored as I type this.

From what I understand someone screwed the pooch on this server move or whatever, and is likely going to lose their job(s). It wasn't me.

So the standard answer to nearly every call is "It's broken." So it's an easy day, but just a laughably absurd situation.

Basically, we get anb easy day, since the voicemail tree tells user that everything is broken. So our call volume is comparatively light as a result.

AND they're catering us a lunch.

How the hell did that work out that way?

When did you move to Alabama, I thought you were in the Dallas area? Just curious as I am from Alabama but have lived in Dallas for 21 years (yep, I'm old).

And Oracle sux. I work for a Fortune 100 company and my division switched to Oracle about 4 years ago. Productivity has now slowed down to the plodding pace of that wonderful piece of crap.

Enjoy your day off. You don't happen to work for AP do you?

    End of April.
And yes, I was in the Dallas area.

It makes life pretty easy when it craps out. I tell everyone that their app is broken.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I do... Well, the umbrella company, anyway.
And it's not really a day off. It's just a relatively easy day, since users are being told up front that their apps are all broken and probably will be broken all day. Most of 'em are hanging up when they hear that.
There are still the few stray idiots that don't bother to listen to the message or some users have other, unrelated issues.....

Interesting. I was a co-op student at AP while at Auburn. I thought I was going to be power engineer designing sub-stations but wound up taking a job in Ft. Worth in embedded computing instead. Married a Texas girl and now I'm stuck out here LOL!

I've never worked a support desk but being in computers I always get asked questions. All my family members come to me for help. And for a while now I've been in technical sales, and the sales guys think I am their local support person. As long as they keep buying lunch it's all good I suppose.

I'm just glad I can yell at someone else when Exchange/Outlook act up.

Add to restore everything back in place with a new DB MSSQL, still restorin at this precise moment. Been a long morning and we still don't know who's fault is this!!!! It wasn't me!!!
