    Headlight Problems & Lamp Question

    1996 Honda Civic.
With only DRLs running, Passenger headlamp is dim, drivers is completely off. When I turn them on, the pass side gets a little brighter, and the drivers heaslamp comes on REALLY dim.

    Any ideas?

ALSO - I'm thinking of upgrading my lamps. Should I go with those "new" blue ones? Is there an inexpensive, good halogen lamp out there? THIS IS A BUDGET-DRIVEN VENTURE! Keep in mind that I'm building a house, and have a wife & 2 kids to feed...

    Thanks, all

    Daytime Running Lamps

I don't know much about the wiring, but I can tell you a little about blue lamps. The expensive ones (HID) that you find in Beemers and Lexuses are available in kit form, but are PRICEY. Several hundred dollars. Plus, you pretty much have to rewire your lighting system becuase they draw so much power. More importantly, the true HID lights don't have high beams, so you need a second set of lamps for the hi beams.

Fortunately, there are fake HID lamps which apparently give a similar blue glow, but only as bright as normal lamps. These (from what I've found) are only available in the bulb only form (no big glass lamps like in most US cars).

And then you come to my solution - a Jeep, so I have the whole lamp to replace. The local Champion (er, Big Wheel, er, Western Auto) sells these Bright White things. They're white - a definate change from the normal yellow, but don't look anything like HID.

As far as your lighting problem goes, have you moved or changed any wiring in the front of the car? Sounds to me like there is a dogdy or missing earth. Check around the back of the headlights for burnt wiring, damaged plugs and also have a real good look at the ground wires for corrosion, damage or a loose connection. Try and have a think back to when it started and see if you can pinpoint it down to something that you may have done. Good luck

Well, I bought a pair of Super White halogens

from This Local Guy. I've purchased stuff (AutoVentShades) from him before, and his prices & service are great, in my opinion. The pair of bulbs ran me $22 + tax.

As I was installing them, I noticed that one of the plugs had melted away on one side. It was something I didn't notice until I had pulled it off the old lamp and started the re&re process.

It was the same headlight that got smacked in my little ACCIDENT last year, so I'm going to place the blame on the Abbotsford Craftsman Collision employee who replaced the lamp. He obviously didn't ensure a clean, solid, waterproof connection.

So i guess I'll order up a new plug - In the meantime, I've made it work for now - Cleaned up the connection, etc.. and MAN! Are those new bulbs ever BRIGHT!!!

    Thanks again, everyone
