up to when I started using Windows XP, I was using 640x480,
Then I up-graded to 800x600 - Still used 640x480 in games for years
Now I use LCDs and projectors - so I use there native resolutions
Computer 1 - 1280x1024 - 17in Dell LCD
Computer 2 - 800x480 - Projector - that uses an 7in LCD and cheap $30 HQI
lamps, quality is not perfect - but I can leave it on all day, just like a real
monitor, watch movies / TV
Car Computer - 640X480 - cheap old LCD
Dad's computer - he's got a huge, wide screen, Viewsonic LCD, its at 800x600 - but
he has eye problems / blind
Upgrading to 2 X 1920X1200 (3840X1200) at home.
Girlfriend is now at 2 X 1680X1050 using my hand-me-down screens (more screen-estate for shoe-shopping web pages...)

I use 1400x1050 on my laptop cause it does!!! its awesome..
on my big machine i use 1280x1024 I have lcd on my big machine now only cost me
$20 at g sale cause someone got a 22 inch screen i got a 19 inch for $20 i got a $150 screen for $20 so i suggest looking at garage sales you never know what you will run across... IF running tvview external into tv i usually go 800x600
