"Windows Vista" is the new "Windows ME"

    yes!!!!

Ok, now that I have stopped laughing, this is a valid comparison. Windows ME is the one example of Microsoft's "Use what we tell you to use" not working at all. And yes, it is ME with improvements. ME would overload your buffers through time until the system locked up. Vista improved that by overloading on install!
    My opinion is my own.

I have been installing different operating systems for years (DOS, Win 3.1, 95, 98, ME, XP, 2000, 2003, Linux, FreeBSD, BeOS, etc) and installed Vista when it first came out. It was fun until the novelty wore off after a few months. I decided to go back to XP and I had forgotten how fast my hardware actually was. XP flew compared to a base install of Vista and I can do everything I need on XP.

I have the Vista sidebar on XP as well as a modified theme to make it look similar to Vista, but will all the speed of XP.

There are modified builds of Vista out there that take a lot of the bloat out, but I haven't tried them since I am pretty happy with my XP build for now.

Vista capable HW have been around for a while now. Thing is, when people heard about the "latest" OS, they rush into buying it only to find it doesnt work on their few years old machine.

Vista is not for everyone, if it work for you then use it. If it doesnt then stick with XP or whatever OS. Im not going to hold on to XP for a few more years just for the hell of it. Ill learn and use vista now rather than later. Ill need to learn it in the future anyway so why not now?

Regardless, the majority is going to be forced to upgrade to it.

Vista came preinstalled on my latest machine. Tried it out, seemed like a PITA.

But after I turned off UAC, opened a real CMD line and made the real administrator account visable, it's not so bad. Seems a little better each time I use it. Sure, it's different from xp in some layouts and of course graphics, but all things change "ya know"?

Haven't updated to SP1 yet, but I hear it's better, if only incrimentally.....

Now, the issues with older peripherals and drivers, not sure what to do with that. But I haven't run into it yet either.

I also hear it won't let you install "unsigned" drivers, that would be a PITA too.........

Jury is still out, but I'm betting it's only a matter of time before xp goes the way of 98 with microsoft support...........

Of course, I have the luxury of a couple machines running different OS's so I'm never really out of luck if something crashes, locks, or just doesn't do what I want it to.......

From what I've been reading, Extended support for windows xp will go until April 8, 2014. I'll hang on to my XP until the drive bay doors fall off my machines to avoid the "Windows ME Redux" known as Vista.

Yup, after digging around in it for a couple weeks, it's official:

I like vista as much as xp.

    More in some areas.

Sure, it's a little bit more bloated than xp, but that'll change as I get more familar with it.

And I'm sure MS will continue to make it better, as long as you have compatible/capable hardware...........

Heck it's only at sp1 and is (essentially) two years old, xp has had a lot more time and work put into it than that. I think alot of the "gripers" forget what a pita xp was when it came out.........

Of course, those who still want to run that printer (driver) they bought in 1997 will probably be out of luck........but really, that's the printer (or whatever hardware) suppliers problem.

Everything appear bloated when they first come out.

People say Win 3.11 is bloated compare to DOS 6.22. Then it was 95, then 98, then ME, then XP. Now they are moaning Vista is bloated, of course, its supplied on a DVD and not on a 1.44mb floppy. Its only bloated when run on a crappy machine.

My Dual CPUs setup WEI is 5.9 all the way and Im not gonna install Win 98SE (some claimed to be the best OS from MS). Its a waste of potential me think.

The next door neighbor want Vista on her 1.7GHz P4, 128MB machine, because she heard the latest thing and its called "VISTA".

Actually if they bought a decent printer, VISTA would have the driver for it. My old HP LJ4 bought back in the early 90s and it work with Vista x64

Only if I still have my old Epson FX80 I think it was bought back in the mid 80s, used with the Amiga 500, I bet it would work with Vista

Dell XPS M170, 2.26GHz processor, NVIDIA Geforce Go 7800 GTX, 256MB, 2GB Ram.......Vista is bloated on ANY machine. Just runs better on some, but still bloated, and slow. (oh yeah, Vista experience level or whatever that thing was called......4.1)

ME was crap after 98, ME was crap after 2000, ME was crap after XP. Vista is the new version of ME. And it will be crap after Windows 7. People who "like" Vista, just don't want to admit they threw away a lot of money. That's why I tried 3 different times to "like" Vista. Just ain't happenin', and yeah, I lost a lot of money. And it's ever bit as popular and Windows XP 64 (that was a waste of money. No one wanted to make ANY drivers for it).
