Which OS for Simple File Server

    Hey guys,
I'm in the process of piecing together a File server for my work. I need to know which OS you guys would prefer that I use for it. Windows 98 or Windows NT Workstation. Reason for the choices ... well thats all I have. My current place of employment is VERY small and low budget when it comes to the computer side of it. It wont be seen by the outside world as I am on a DSL with a firewall. There is not a Domain set up or anything. That would require 2000 Server, again $$$ issue.

    Here's the Specs:
    Intel 200 MMX
    96 MB RAM
    3Com 10/100

Here's what it needs to do:
    Run Quickbooks 2001
    Winfax Server
    UPS Worldship Software
    and share files.

There are only 3-5 computers that will be accessing this. Just to add into consideration. Please do not Flame this post or bash as I am on a no money budget from my boss.

    Thanx
    Steve

It's really a question of internal security. Got anything on there "sensitive"? Go with NT Workstation.

Otherwiese, they're both pretty much the same. 98 will be easier to work with in terms of drivers and such. I DO NOT miss NT's driver setup!

    Larkar,
Thats great and all, as I tinker with Linux here and there, but it has to run Quickbooks and Winfax.

    NOBODY misses that.

Assuming you have little or limited experience with *nix ..

I would go with win2kpro. It'll be the most easily adaptable to your network, and it will be simple enough to learn and administer, while providing a stable and relatively secure environment.

NTworkstation is just a pain in the ***..

98SE i've never had a problem with it.. but many other people have had stability issues. I was running 98se on a p166 with 16mb ram and i was using it as a gateway/router/fileserver. I had uptimes of half a year (the only reason it wasn't longer is because I needed to update something and reboot.

Believe me I would love tinkler around and get Linux running on my network, but my boss doesnt understand "development time". Thinks everything can be done right the first time and immediatly. Anyone have something simular to this?

No way would I put 98 on it unless I had to for some kind of compatablity issue.
Go with NT is what I would recommend.

What are the other workstations that will be connecting to it, if they are NT, then you almost have to go with NT on this box. Getting a client with NT to read files from a 98 machine is not easy.
Your drive space may be a factor in the decesion though.
With NT, you are stuck with partition limits, with 98 you have more partition choices.

98 can't take advantage and use memory over 16 MB like NT can

I think you are a bit confused.. It's difficult to get a 98 client to read off an NT server.. getting an NT workstation to read off a 98 server is really no different than accessing it with 98 really...

There is an issue with Windows NT Workstation. You can only have x connections at one time (I think its 10 or 15). As long as you have less than that your ok. Your still better off with NT over 9x but I would really look into 2k, at least professional if not server. Linux is a good idea here, quickbooks doesn't really matter because you can set that to be just a file share. The WinFax server is where you'll have the problem.

Answer: Tell the boss to spring for 2k server.

OK, here's one for you all then.
Ive got a windows 200 server as the PDC on my domain.
three win 2000 workstation machines access between them all with permissions aint a problem. There is also one win98 machine which can access the server and workstations.
However the problem appears when the 2000 machines try to access shares on the w98 PC. They cant. They get an error message saying they are refused access. W98 is setup to attach to the domain with user level access control, yet it still doesnt work.
    Does anyone know why?

    Dave
