What should be my first car?

Im going to get my first car, fairly soon, and i cant quite decide what i want to get. For some reason, i really want to get a ford ranger, but i do not want to make up my choice this soon. I will be able to spend $5,000, maybe a little bit more. I don't really care what kinda of vehice it is.

So can i get some opinions on the ford ranger (2000), or other good vehicles to get for $5,000 or less?

What are your criteria? Truck, car? Gas mileage, horsepower? Foreign, domestic? Reliability, maintenance? Servicing expense, parts availability? Old, older, or needs restoring?

id like a truck, good gas milage, med horse, american made, nothing before 1990.

This guy is a friend of mine, he's been bugging me to help him out... His parents want him to have something fairly new, with less than 100k miles. Make/model no preference, but he wants a pickup.

Criteria:

1. Used
2. Less than 100k miles
3. American made
4. Mileage > 18
5. $5,000 or less
6. No older than 18 years old
7. Moderate horsepower

A search on cars.com finds the following candidates:

Chevy S-10
Dodge Dakota
Ford Ranger
GMC Sonoma

For a little over 4k you could get a nice 96-98 land cruiser.

Mazda MX-5? That would be a great first car, it would make you enjoy driving everyday. Lots of aftermaket for it too.

98+ Ranger would be a fine choice, same platform as my Explorer which I love to death, best car I ever owned. Gets way better gas mileage than imports too, with more power and larger interior.
