Only 2 ways smoke goes away. Time or professional cleaning.

When my dad stopped smoking, it took almost 5 years for the garage to not smell like smoke at all. And this is a garage where the door is constantly being opened/closed. Smoke gets in things. I can tell if there is smoke coming from 3 cars up on the interstate to the point where I put on the recirculating air and close the windows.

You need to steam clean the car, the whole car. But even then, it is very hard to get smoke out of things like the dash itself. That will just take time. This is why you never buy a used car from a smoker...

Febreeze works surprisingly good, but I'd change the cabin filter too.

Try renting an ozone generator, for find a detailing shop that has one. They are expensive to buy (several hundred dollars and up), but will do the job most of the time. I once worked at a hotel, and sometimes non-smoking rooms were smoked in. We put the ozone generator in overnight and the smoke smells were gone, non-smokers never complained.

In one day the smoke will have hardly had the time to penetrate.

With a car and years of someone smoking, that smoke and tar ( and it usually is the tar that does it) is really going to have sunk in.

I agree, I'm a non smoker and when I use to drive my Ford Focus I didn't allow anyone to smoke on the inside. When I decided to give the car to my mom, since I now had my SUV, and their car kicked the bucket (Hyundai back then was $h!t). Now when you look at the light grey roof, its literally turning brownish, black. The interior in my new truck is black and my mom tried to use that excuse to try to smoke a cigarette, (don't bash me with what i am about to say), but I promptly pulled over and told her to get out of car unless she puts anything that has to do with smoking away (yes, i take it that serious that I'm willing to kick my mom out my car). I think a really good cleaning will help, vacuum, then clean with cleaner, then vacuum again. Clean all upholstery with armourall wipes, they will give the car a new car smell. Then if you still smell something, use febreeze.

Take up smoking. You won't even notice it then.
    My opinion is my own.
