    Auto transmission dead

anyone on here got any experiance with trannys?

Its an old one, a 4hp18 as used in saab 9000 and others.

    Its the FWD variant

Its lost its ability to change to 2nd gear, stays in first, top speed is now 30mph at 6000rpm...
Its not the gear lever / cable, checked that
Its not a blocked filter, checked that, and found no crap metal etc or anything
done a partial change of dexII, will do some more/ levels fine.

I need help or the car will have to be squashed to a cube.

    I cant buy another

I'm in the land of make believe, otherwise know as the UK, so we dont fix them over here, hell we dont buy them over here......

tools available are general bodgers tools, ie some screw drivers and a set of spanners..

I have little time and no money...

    HELP!

is this when the car is in drive (not sure about UK if its the same, but drive is when itll shift through the gears as needed up and down) do you have the option to go from low gear(i.e. 1st) to 2nd or drive?

Yes but this is the informed side in this case, people on here drive automatics, and have expensive repair shops for trannys, in fact here you can say your off to sort your tranny and probably not even get a giggle, but for every expensive by the book repair shop, they will be someone who knows how to do it with some common tools and duckt tape....

I need that man, for all i have is common tools and duct tape..

exactly like the ones on your side of the road, except he control stick is usually floor mounted/

The 4hp18 is an older style box with no electronics to mess up its a pure mechanical box with pistons and valves to control the shift.

It drove fine, then I had to rev the engine very hard, to about 6000 rpm and hold it there a second or two to test the smoke emissions

it was then drven forward onto a rollling road for a brake test, than onto a 4 post lift/raising platform to check under the car for rust/rot, then off and out the door

I drove away nice blue ticket in hand, and it never went into 2nd....

I looked down and the shifter was in 1, so i moved it to D, still no 2/3/4 etc (its a 4 speed auto, but 4th is not a real gear its nothing more than a steel bar giving 1:1)

So, trying different things on way home stuck in 1st was that if i out the shifter into 1st, drive to about 30mph, then taking my foot off the gas, the car quickly slows, as its in 1st.

If I put the shifter in D, accelerate to 30mph, the car stays in 1st, if i take my foot off the gas, the car coasts in like neutral for about a thousand feet, and slows slowly, then goes back into 1st and slows quickly.

So from that i think the cable linkage is fine.

seems whatever piston / valve arrangement should push the gear wheels into 2nd, are not doing so.

after reading a bit of the manual i found online, you cant go from 1st to 3rd as the pressure to get the pistons for 3rd to move, are fed from a valve off 2nd, so no 2nd, no 3rd...hell i could live without 2nd if i got 3rd!

i think the 4hp18 is an later 4hp14, about 10 years ago i had one of those fail, no forward gears when warm, so i junked/scrapped it, but this is the only car i have now, am in negative equity everywhere and still out of a job with no income to speak of, things are looking bad...

well trannies aren't really fixable using jaffas cakes and duct tape. It would be best to go to a scrapyard find something with the same tranny and take that home. Or just buy a new car. It may not be pretty but cars can be had for a few hundred quid.

    150GBP : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volvo-740-7-se...d=p3286.c0.m14

Then just hotwire it with a button which I am sure you can do and it works. Cheaper than fixing a tranny by yourself or in a shop.

that may be only option, another car, i like this one though, so maybe another one with the sam gearbox, would cost less than 500ukp, or maybe i may drop lucky on a gearbox for less.

did think of a different gearbox, options would be later autobox, with the obv problems of having to add the electronics, which i think talks to the engine ecu, so may then need ecu swap, and wiring, and all in all, thats probably going to be more complicated then taking this box out and buying the rigt tools and service manual.....

option convert to a 5 speed manual box - but then insurance companys may not want to insure it, been their got the tshirt etc.

    dream option, flappy paddle gearbox,,,,

but, this is an old box, its not full of magic, its full of little springs and balls to cover holes until a certain pressure is reached, they then allow fluid to pass, to push a piston, to push a rod, to move some clutch plates, its a chain of events, happening in a set sequence for the 4 gears, that may be over simplified but thats all it really is.

    US cars with it are

    chrysler PREMIER/MONACO 88-92 4 SPEED FWD V6 3.0L ZF 4HP18
    also as dodge and eagle......

    anyone remeber them?

yes, did a drain and refill, which on these boxes is about 1/3 of it, so you have to do it about 5 times to have any good effect

usually trick is to buy 25ltrs and just keep changing it till you run out....
