Whats needed for 'lights on delay'?

    Evening all,

I've just completed some mods to my Vauxhall Astra SXi and I'm hoping to do the 'lights on delay' (as known 'follow me home' or 'find me home') modification too. For those that are unfamiliar with this mod, the side lights/fog lights come on when the car is locked or unlocked for a specified time delay (i.e. 30 seconds) to allow the user to see thier way to the house or find their car in the car park.

I guess I'll need a timer relay that is activated by the lock/unlock pulses and a fused permanent 12v supply to side lights/fog lights when relay energised and side lights/fog lights straight through when not energised.

I obviously need a changeover relay with a timer delay, but could anyone recommend a a decent relay for the job?

I'm also assuming it is this straight forward. Any comments to the contrary are most welcome.

    Thanks

You could use a timer circuit along with a standard automotive relay put in parallel (Not series) with your normal light switch. Search the forums, there are are a few timer circuits here. Then you just have to figure out where the the lock/unlock pulse comes from, and tie that into a latching relay which activates the timer circuit, and then tie the latch for that relay into the output of the timer circuit so it automatically turns off the timer (and the lights of course) after the timer is up.

RevFE - Super fast, modular frontend. Most powerful skinning engine in existence. Strong enough for an i7 made for a fitpc.
Just a shame I can't justify a carpc to use it on anymore.
