i have the dev phone 1 (basically a rooted g1, the fist android phone) there are so much these phones can do it is amazing, and the community around the phones is also quite impressive

head over to xda-developers to see what i mean.

as far as in a car pc it would be really nice to get google maps navigation working, as i enjoy using it over my tom tom, and with things like traffic, street view and what not it really is much more useful

But see that is the problem you have written a program but you are the only one using it because you made it for your use. the Ipohone community is a share community people believe there are 80,000 apps there are way more than that once you jailbreak then all the so called things the Iphone can't do it does.

Don't get me wrong I own 2 phones a Mytouch 3g and a Iphone but for right now my Iphone is way more usefull. As an example my Iphone has 5 seperate extensions that means which ever app I choose to use a different number comes up on your caller id. I put a carpc in my siters car she didn't want to buy a seperate monitor so I used the one she had in there all controlled by her Iphone something at this time couldn't be done with the android system as of yet.

Everyone has a different need or want in a mobile phone android is a great system believe me it's way better then winmobile, webos, and all others except for the Iphone system maybe in the future but not now. The users make the Iphone what it is not Apple.

The following and development it has by the users have become unrivaled but android is catching up, there is nothong I can't do with my Iphone I have no restictions.

There is even a user on this forum (can't remeber his name) but instead of a carpc he had his Iphone custom modded into his dash. Like I said Android is coming into itself just not yet needs way more work.
how are you controlling her monitor? android has a number of applications (Gmote, phonemypc, etc) designed to do just that

I currently have both an iPhone 3G and a Motorola DROID (iPhone for my personal line, Droid is a company phone). I love my iPhone but if I had to get rid of one, it would be the phone I dropped. Google Maps Navigation on my DROID is awesome, carhome is excellent, google voice search etc.

I have a 2001 BMW M5 and would love to find a way to tie my DROID into the stock navigation screen, but I don't know if video out on the DROID is possible. I've been using the Motorola made cardock for now and it's been great, would love to find a more integrated solution.

Doubtful you'd be able to do any sort of video out. I agree the google navigation is by far the best, smoothest,. and eye pleasing navi out there. Wish they would bundle a software together for car pc's.

Having used both, I can safely say that the iPhone sucks. In a business environment, it's a horrible horrible phone. I have many clients that went back to BLACKBERRYs after using an iPhone for business purposes. It's a fun phone for personal and occasional business use, but the droid, and even the blackberry, blows it out of the water. It's all just a matter of opinion and purpose.

I think the droid combined the functionality of the blackberry with the fun-ness of an iPhone to produce the perfect phone for me. Plus the qwerty keyboard I could never live without. The droid's OSK is about on par with iPhone in terms of usage, but texting while driving... I need to feel where I'm at, not look. Be safe out there while texting and driving, dont use an iPhone. iPhone + driving + texting = "Sorry, didn't see you..."

EDIT: And a big hell yeah for rooting the Droid... even after destroying my /dev/block/mtdblock by accidentally mounting the wrong partition then writing to it (Missed the 4... oops), I'm still up and working. Thank god for backups.

    My Droid

I got a Droid for Christmas, and have to agree on all the positive comments I've read. I have already found many workarounds for things people complain that it won't do. (Have you tried pressing and holding the 'home' button? It brings a little popup with the most recent 6 apps you've accessed!)

When I first shopped for the Droid, I was in line behind a guy who was returning his Droid after a few weeks. He had a list of problems and things it wouldn't do a mile long. It almost scared me away, but I thought the best way to lear was to try it out. I found that many of the things he said the Droid wouldn't do were wrong. (For example he said you couldn't assign a custom ringtone to a contact). There is no mobile phone/PDA/entertainment device that will be 100% pleasing to 100% of the people, 100% of the time, and I already find some Droid 'features' annoying. But on the whole it FAR exceeds my expectations on the whole.

I haven't fully tried it yet but GREMOTE promises to be a killer app for car computing. Use the droid as wireless mouse, touchpad, Keyboard for your computer over WiFi or Bluetooth. I'm hopeful a full-functioned open source equivalent will be coming out someday soon. Gmote is a simpler free version for Android, but doesn't support Bluetooth and doesn't do keyboard and mouse. Good for file browing and remotely starting music playing and stuff though.

    Droid Charger

I was bummed in moving from my Blackberry to the Droid to learn that it went from minUSB to microUSB. I think someone could make a mint by standing outside the verizon store and selling these for $5 each. Name: 31iej-wwbDL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

I think Verizon is charging about $50 for a 'kit' that consists mostly of a car charger. What a rip.
