    Motorola Droid

I'm posting this here rather than the Mobile Devices subforum because I'm more curious about overall impressions of the phone itself. I just got one, and to be honest I'm absolutely floored with the number of features and overall feel and design. I had a blackberry storm for about 6 months, and during that time I had to replace it three times. I tried to get into hacking it a bit, but there really wasn't much you could do. I came up on my upgrade period, got the droid, and immediately realized that it was the way to go.

Has anyone else gotten one, and if so what is your impression?

I'm a bit surprised there isnt more interest in this. In the past two hours, i pushed out a quick program for my droid that lets me make phone calls from my PC over bluetooth simply by clicking a button. I'm going to be working on sms and contact list this week... but the api is very open and very simple. I think within a month I could have full control of my phone from my PC. Isn't this kinda the point of the whole carpc integration thing?

currently, i use a iphone, and am watching this thread to see where it goes-- after all the devices that have claimed to be iphone killers, from what i have seen(not much), this phone has the best chance to take over what apple started...

Well, i have not been able to put it down since I purchased it. The interface takes a bit of betting used to since this is my first andriod phone, but so far, but I found the menus to be fairly intuitive once having learned the basic control.

I hope you share the PC control. I would love that kinda control from my car to phone.

    Some minor nuiances:
    - Can't dial a number and then add to contacts. Have to go into contacts to add new number and go thru all the fields. (At least, I haven't figured it out yet)
    - While in a call, have to go "home," then to "phone," then contacts for contact lookup if you're looking up a number for someone.
    - I miss the auto on/off feature on my BB (real battery saver and sleep saver).
    - Have to keep "mounting" the SD card when connecting to a computer to read the SD card. (I'm sure there's an automount in there somewhere)
    - Facebook app that comes with it sucks.

My initial impressions of it essentially mirror whats already out there in a simple search. Haven't had the chance to try the audio/video players yet.

I'm already convinced that a phone running Android, in the CarPC integration world, will kill every other integrated solution out there.

Well, apparently it is impossible to answer or hang up a call through a program, it can only be done with a button push on the phone itself. So until they change the SDK, or I get root access to make modifications to the OS myself this project is dead. Guess the open OS isn't so open eh?

I spoke too soon. I got bluetooth phone control working through my own control app, I'll have to see how the standard libs do bluetooth control, to see if I can make it compatable with the phone control programs already in use in the carpc world.

Keep us in the loop on this. I was under the impression us CDMA saps were S.O.L. getting carPC control of our phones.
