Aight so we have seen a lot of cars and trucks a couple boats roll through this forum. Now its time to change it up. I recently moved to my new place and just finished having my friend build my kick *** deck! So I was sitting on my deck going "Damn, I wish I had my tunes playing right now. Even FM would be good." Then it hit me like a cargo van of hookers. Why not put a car stereo in one of my computers and leave it out on the deck. Car Computing in Reverse!
So here is my devilish plot to destroy peace and quiet.
1 - Computer. I'll post the specs later. Just want to throw out my idea
1 - Am/Fm Car stereo deck Since there are two decks in this thread We will just call this the Car Stereo to avoid confusion
1 - 400w 4Ch Amp
4 - 6.5 Marine Speakers Their location is going to make them need a little more protection that standard car speakers.
1 - 450w Secondary Power Supply
So I take the 2nd PSU wire it to come on with the primary PSU. Take its 12v rail and wire it to the amp. Since I will only be running a minimal components in the pc (i.e. Only a hard drive and maybe a usb touch sreen) I feel I can run the car stereo off the primary PSU. Also the power for the speakers is going to be supplied by the amp anyway so the car stereo will just be a "receiver" of sorts.
So, Why the car stereo? It keeps to the KISS method. I want AM/FM radio and I don't want to do a bunch of searching and figuring out how to make this one software work with another blah blah blah... Also if something happens to the PC I can just rewire its power supply to feed the radio and boom you have a deck in stereo. (wait isn't that two decks?)
Something I have to keep in mind is my girl friend isn't the greatest with technology. So the simpler I make it, the happier she will be.
I hope I have explained myself clear enough. I'm pretty much just looking for your thoughts on this. Good idea, bad idea, another way to look at it. I must say I have seen car stereos in computers before, never seen an amp though. Maybe there is a reason for that. I'll do a worklog if anyone is interested.

this reminds me-- i need to get a am/fm/cd deck, and 8" sub for my ipod boom box...
one problem that i have had in the past is that computer power supplies will cutout when pushing the setup hard(with either a am/fm deck, or amp)even if the deck is below the max amperage of the power supply... as long as you keep it at a adequate level though, it is fine..
otherwise, it looks like your on the right path.

I just put outdoor RF speakers outside as the B Channel of my home entertainment system (already have a tablet to control it as well as my phone). Not nearly 400W, but I like my neighbors.

Well the speakers are 45 RMS with 100 peak. I was shooting to supply them with 30-35w RMS. Then when the old lady is out of town, I can crank it up for the sexy parties. I guess my biggest problem is I don't really know of any other way to power it. I also don't know if they make an amp that runs off 120v that is not a receiver. Everything that I have looked at has been more than what I need or way too much cash and I would have to build it.
maybe a 500w PSU to be safe? Screw it! I'll try the 450 and see what I blow up.
Then what the hell would I do with a head leaking blood all over the place? Stick it on a pole? Too Western Europe... Anyone else notice I didn't ask who's head? I got a list.
I want to try a headless setup one day, but I dont think this project will take any benefit from it. I am thinking about one of those USB touch screens just for the convenience of it. Always wanted to play with one since they came out and this seems like a perfect project for it since there will be no video just interface.
The headless project I want to try is one that Kev inspired me to do. His Clusters of Nothingness has me curious.
That was along the lines of my first thought. Just run a speaker from my receiver in my office. Then my hamster kept running and it lead to other thoughts of grandeur. One day I would like to put up a projector and watch movies from the deck. Which I guess I could run video cable out to the deck and run it from my office and control from my phone... But why the hell would I post that here and ask questions?
My nearest neighbor is 1/4 of a mile away. I'm sitting on 35.986 acres. Its pretty cool cause I'm still in city limits. So I get city water and sewage! Whoo Hooo!! Funny story about getting power to the house. Mississippi Power has two power lines running through my land and they own 16 acres between me and my nearest neighbor. They are not my power company. I had to use one of their competitors EMEPA. But for them to run power to my house they had to get an easement from MP. And southerns wonder why they are called retarded by the rest of the country.
