Sony sues Geohot and Fail0verflow for PS3 jailbreak

WTF? Didn't the EFF and the courts rule jailbreaking as LEGAL as long as it isn't used for piracy? Now Sony turns around and sues Geohot and his buddies for cracking their protection keys (at the hardware level even) and for "losses."

See here for the releases and "papers" from Sony (PDF warning):

    technicalities...

after a brief look at the first pdf on the site, it says that the encryption that they made allowed for piracy... piracy is illegal, but from what i understand, jailbreaking a device to allow for different features/uses is not illegal.. according to that, if they had jailbroken ps3's to surf the web, run their custom programs/apps, etc, it would not have been a problem..

though i still think these companies are getting nastier..

But from what I understand, Geohot and fail0verflow states when the keys were released that it was to be used for backups only and that they do not condone piracy. And AFAIK that should keep them out of trouble.

But what really me off was that one of those dox states that Geohot has to relinquish all of his tech over to whoever for it to be searched. All HDDs, flash drives, CDs, etc. That's bull !

Also thought I would add that Geohot has only wriiten one PS3 app (that I know of) and it was just a "Hello, World!" type thing that showed a PNG that says, "sup dawg? It's Geohot!"

In that case, then it is complete BS that sony is going after either(imo, as long as they say that the app is not to be used for piracy, they- the developers, should not be liable)

I guess it is more of the same-- Sony was hurt by the ressesion(sp?) and instead of dealing with it like most, decided to take it out on others...
