18.000. Fine, I'd say. But we still can't use it on the passenger compartment freely, while in the pilot cabin, close to all those analog and digital instruments, it's perfectly fine. Why is that again?

I think it's a good concept in theory, but I'd feel much better about it if they developed their own software and hardware.
The nice thing, I'm sure they can lock down the ipad to prevent the pilots from putting random apps on it. Hopefully :/
I work for a private aviation company and we have ipads in the planes. Trust me... it is a VERY good thing. It used to be 70 lbs of paper charts that were printed out daily or else they were out of date. The pilots had to rifle through said 70lbs of charts to find their chart in an emergency. The ipads are updated instantly with new data.
The FAA is VERY strict about these things and have pushed them through 1000's of hours of brutal testing.
Our iPads are locked down and only have necessary navigation software.
Lastly, flying planes and driving cars are so apples and oranges. Certainly the pilot shouldn't be playing angry birds while approaching a runway but when you are 30,000 feet above anything and the nearest plane is 50 miles away... looking down for 30 seconds is pretty safe. Just sayin.
