    Travel to Canada

I'm thinking about traveling up to Vancouver this weekend. I don’t have a passport and I am a natural born US citizen. I know I need both proof of identification and proof of citizenship to cross back into the US. I have a driver’s license as proof of identification but for the proof of citizenship I wondering if it’s still okay to use a voter’s registration card? I’ve heard conflicting things about that. Ideally it would be best to have my original birth certificate as proof of citizenship, but I don’t think my parents can get their act together and mail it to me (from across the country in Maryland) to me before I want to leave.

every time i have gone into canada, all that is asked at the border is where if you are a citizen of the US, where you are specifically from, what you are planning on doing, and if you have brought any guns, weapons, alcohol, and some other things.

it is very easy to cross the border with little hassle. i didnt even have to show an ID. just be courteous, and DO NOT do anything funny, make jokes, say anything off-color. border gaurds are very easy to set off, and they have no problem making you go in for a strip search or full vehicle search.

if you play by the rules, you should have no problems. i dont even think i brought any id other than my drivers license. if you are bringing anything into the country, be sure you declare it... the duty is cheap compared to the fines.

Drop by your local Post Office and get a passport made just for the hell of it; even if you won't be able to use it this weekend. You never know when you'll need it, so it's always handy to have around.

As for crossing the border without one, I have no advice.

I had a college roommate that went up to Canada with his GF and he never made it up there. I guess they were pulling over a lot of kids going up there that day and since he had a DUI on his record he got banned from Canada and was told never to go back. I guess they won't let you in if you have a DUI.. we all found it funny he got banned from a country

All you need is a drivers license. It is the only thing they have ever asked me for. They will ask you the reason for your trip and how long you plan to stay. Unless something comes up on your drivers license or plate, you have no worries.

Well I made there and back. They asked for my birth certificate or passport crossing both borders, of course I didn’t have either document. The Canadians where happy with the voter’s registration card and asked me about the nature of my trip. Getting back into the states they guy said a voter’s registration wasn't acceptable but he didn't seem to care and let me go anyway, he didn’t even bother asking questions about my trip.
