Shove a few cameras on that thing transmitting wirelessly (one on top corners of windscreen) and transmit them into a pair of glasses (for 3d view) and you can drive the car in real-time in 3d
/me wonders if that is really possible...

I'm glad you guys liked it. I love the Knight Rider sound effects and dialog at the end when they jump the thing.
Man, makes me wish I lived near a desert, had a junk car and a little spare time!

If any of you don't watch it, it's a killer new show.. but anyway Mythbusters on the Discovery channel aired an episode last night where they remote controlled a car (with rocket engines on the top no less).. They have some segments where you can see the steering wheel working. Initially it looked like they did a chain drive directly to the steering column but then later it looked like they had a device turning the wheel itself..
Remote controlling a car doesn't look very hard at all. I have a 1970 school bus sitting around that I might just do this toI also coincidentally have an assload of servos and RC equipment.. Enticing!

do it gork!just no playing need for speed or gran turismo on the same control set as the bus controls hehe.
on the serious side of things, a true drive-by-wire system where steering, gas, brake are all computer controlled is a seriously hot research topic. that's the basis of an auto-drive system. the current state of things, it's like the helicopter. older military helicopters were still mechnical link connections so no autopilot was available. but now some of the newer copters are fly by wire so autopilot is an option.

I saw 2 teams made full size RC cars in 2 days to fight each other in one of the Junkward Wars show on Discovery Channel. That was cool

If it's stuck, force it. If it breaks it needed replacing anyway
I decided that I might as well look into seriously doing this.. The difference is that I'd want a car that can have everything easily removed for regular driving too if I do it to the bus.. Anyway, here's what I found:
