either a bad gauge or a bad sending unit(sensor) on the engine
my truck does the same thing
I think I might have a big problem.Just kind of learning about what exactly the oil pressure gauge means... of course my Jeep says, 20/40/80 as standard. The needle however is buried way past 80... like it would read about 120 if it was labelled. I honestly DON'T know what the oil pressure is related to, but this can't good.
Might just be a bad sensor though... I have been driving it for a good 30 miles or more from the last oil change. Which I did myself.

Either bad sensor/wiring/gauge or a block in an oil passage / stuck relief valve.

Apparently I had loosened the wire off the sensor when installing the oil filter. My dad fixed it for me.

to answer you other question, the oil pressure is in relation to how much oil you have in the engine. If you have too little, the pressure will fall, but if u have too much, the pressure increases.
