    Question What would you do?

I currently attend a university that has a laptop program. Its a really bad deal for the students....its 1000 dollars a year and you dont get to keep your laptops. I have had mine for two years. (on shedule to get a new one in a few weeks) I opened the laptop today and the screen was cracked ..So I headed to the website and this is what I got

Each laptop is covered under an insurance policy. The maximum amount payable by the student is $200 per damage incident. This means that laptop damages not covered under manufacturer warranty will be billed to the student up to the deductible. Examples of billable damages include: liquid spills on the laptop, cracks in screens or laptop cases caused by dropping the laptop, excessive scratches on the cases or screens that are not attributed to normal wear and tear, broken parts such as compartments or doors or hinges that were forced open beyond normal limits, etc. "

Anyway this ****es me off..I mean god d*mn... Heres the thing if the laptop cant/doesnt power on you cant really tell the screen is cracked..and I have nothing to loose becuase the max they can charge me is $200. So what do you recommend I due?

Ya but they will get it to power on eventually, and then they will see its cracked and come back at ya, plus if your school really pushes it they may not like the fact that you were dishonest about the whole deal and you could be punished in another fashion. I'll tell you what, I work for a major computer company and when somebody cracks there LCD screen and they do not have an accidental damage policy on it, we charge them a minimum of 600 dollars for the service and screen.... minimum... I've seen 999 before... ridiculous I know however.... it sux. You ask me man, fork out the $200.00 dollars.

Can't you just go and buy your own laptop by the way? I mean for 1000 dollars a year it would almost be cheaper.....
New CarPC on the way again I think. I miss my old one!!!

Yeah it would be WAY cheaper..but its mandatory for all students!!! I would be honest if the laptop program wasnt such a HUGE rip off.

It's mandatory that you use their laptops, or that you have one? You can buy laptops for as little as $700 new.

I don't get it. Do you think they'll figure the repair price for a laptop that doesn't turn on will be cheaper than one with a cracked screen? Therefore they may not charge you (all of) the $200?

Yes, its manditory that you have one of their laptops. And a cracked screen is 200...they told us that. I am thinking maybe they will just think the hardware has failed..so that would be covered under warranty.

It seems that your school is running a racketeering program, they FORCE you to use their laptop. This is EXTORTION in a grand fashion. I would recommend you attend a different school after your semester is over, next time you go through the security at the airport, figure out how to LOSE the laptop and then report it stolen (hopefully someone will steal it at the security checkpoint)

The laptop is not even yours, so legally you are LEASING or RENTING the laptop, so you have minimal responsibility.
