Air Filter and Fuel saver

Well the time has come that I need to change my air filter on my 2001 mustang GT. but I wanted to get a few opinions before I started to shell out my hard earned cash.

I am looking at a K&N air filter because they saw it has greater airflow and it can be washed. The downside to this filter is it is $60. Normally I would just go buy a $10 cheap filter, but with this car I am not sure if the K&N will be better or not.

Also I was wondering if anyone had any success with those tornado fuel savers that I have seen on TV, they say that it increases horsepower and raises gas mileage, but I have heard some people saying that they are not worth the metal they are made from.

K+N filters will destroy the mass air meter. Look for a air filter by Macs. Wet filters are evil, I end up taking them out of customers cars after they foul the meter. I am a Ford tech btw.

I can see the "tornado" style effect being useful for some engines, but not fuel injection. What exaclty are they trying to accomplish? With air and fuel as in a carburator, I can see them trying to swirl, but with air alone, I dont see what their trying to mix.

Stick with a good CAI kit or just a Macs filter and call it good. You will make much more power with an aftermarket catted h or X pipe,, save your pennies!

I forgot the company name, but i saw one that makes a great dry washable filter that has incredible air flow. I think the company name began with an A... If i had the money i would have gotten one for my car, and now i don't remember the name of the damn thing.

So the best bet would be to grab a cold air induction kit ? The big thing I am looking for is to increase my MPG, at this point a few more Horse would not be a bad thing , but increased fuel eff. is the target goal.

I would go for an AEM cold air in take. They're not too pricy, and since the intake grabs air that is a lot colder the engine will need less fuel to get the same performance.

Yea, I would say if you can afford it look for the mac, or similar. Try a local Stang shop, they are likely to recommend a good filter assembly. Stay away from the Schucks or Napa stuff. Its all bling bling baby.

i don't know if they're still made, but densecharger makes decent cai kits for mustangs. they're made out of abs plastic, they don't look pretty, but are cheap and they seem to work well.

Or make your own intake. I made one on my Jimmy and it works great. I learned how to do it on the BlazinLow forum. I removed my old air box and then I used a 3" Fernco coupler (Rubber coupler with worm clamps on each end - $6) and attatched that to my MAF sensor. Then I took a 3" 45* street elbow (PVC - $1.89), which I attatched to the other end of the coupler and took a cone style filter (Fram - $11) and attatched that to the other end of the elbow. I don't know if something like that would work for a Mustang, but it's worth a try if you don't feel like spending $200.

I have the AEM V2 in my car and I don't think it sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I have seen a slight increase in mpg and a much more noticeable increase in horsepower especially after 5k rpm. Sure its a little bit louder but I wouldn't call it a hoover by any means.
