Talking The Ultimate GPS Test ( Lake District )

The holidays were approaching and I was heading out with about 4-5 other cars for a weeks camping in the lake district for easter. Normally I would print out the maps from mappoint and take an atlas as backup - not this time, I have my carPC installed ! I took the plunge and took no printed maps or an atlas.... A few of my friends were extremely skeptical this little PC could navigate us over 200miles - but I assured them it would be fine !

We left off following the directions from Destinator 2 which sensibly headed up the M1 - and then joined the M6, by now it was about lunchtime and we needed somewhere to stop! no worries, just pulled up the POI list and found the nearest service station, destinator even routed me around the service station itself ! Everyone suitably impressed we continued.... I wanted to take the M6 toll - but unfortuatly D2 doesn't have it in its maps ( D3 might ? ) and no amount of voice prompts for U turns by the nice computer lady could stop me ( allthough very embarrasing to have to kill pc audio for annoyance )
    - Ah almost there, but what's this we've turned off the main road to lake windermere and headed down a country lane in what seemed like the wrong direction.... Oh dear - my friends are totally convinced now its got us lost - not wanting to lose face - I continued to follow directions. By now the roads are getting smaller and smaller and we are now very high up on dirt tracks !!!!!
After passing through a farm and past some tractors heading the other way, we came across a fjord. This was the deepest ford i've ever seen !, it was at least 40ft wide and looked quite deep. On the other side a landrover looked at it tentativly and started to make his way over. By the time his wheels were completely submerged he gave up and reversed out. By now i have a car full of 3 complaining people, convinced we are totally lost ! I knew i was swapping my car out after the holiday so I went for it. deeper and deeper the water got - and eventually started lapping over top of bonnet and water was seeping in the doors ! Just about got through before engine choked and amazingly we'd got through and the engine still ran - GPS urging me to contiune. The landrover driver looked completly agast. On we went not daring to turn back through the river. a few mins later we started to recognise the road - Turns out it had found a back route into the campsite we didn't know existed ! Pulled up at reception and looked for the other cars... noone here - maybe we're so late they've headed to pub? nope noone had signed in... an HOUR later the first car pulled in !!! they had been motoring to get there first and couldn't work out how we'd beat them. The people in my car were amazed - I now have 3 orders for carpc's
I think GPS passed the test ! ( allthough you certainly live life on the dangerous side under it's control ) The level of detail on the maps is staggering ( these roads were not marked on mappoint )

Talk about the scenic route !

Well, I'm about ready to decide what GPS software to use. I guess I can eliminate D2. I wouldn't even think of taking my car anywhere that a Landrover owner would think twice about going.

I may even need to loan my car to my Mom someday. Can you imagine a phone call from your mother saying, "Your car told me to drive into the river."
