I hate mergers, but at least I'm getting a new phone

For those of you not in the States (and those of you here who don't know), here's a little background before we get into it--In February of this year Cingular Wireless bought AT&T Wireless for $41B to "create the largest GSM network in the United States with spectrum in 49 states and coverage in 97 of the top 100 markets".

I bought a Nokia 3650 for $200 last summer, which was a great deal at the time, and signed up for GSM service here in Starkville, Mississippi. I had no problem paying that much for a phone because I the phone before that I had purchased 3 years earlier for about the same price. About a month later, I heard that AT&T had stopped selling new GSM Service, but I was assured that I "would have GSM service as long as I was with AT&T".

Cingular bought AT&T, and last week I got a letter from a company called UniCel. Apparently, Cingular sold all of AT&T's "rural customers" to UniCel. In the letter, they stated that I would have to buy a TDMA phone in order to keep my service with them, and that I would have to do it by June 23. I called them (after calling AT&T to make sure it wasnt a scam) and, since I am not a "new" customer, I have to buy a phone outright or sign a new contract to get a phone at a discount.

I am moving in 2 months. I dont want a new contract. I dont know where I'll be, or what coverage I'll have. With no contract, their cheapest phone is $400. And now my 3650 is a paperweight because it's SIMlocked and no one seems to know how to unlock it.

Anyway, I had planned to go to T-Mobile and get a Sony 610 so I can use PhoneControl in August, but it looks like I'll be doing that this weekend.

A year ago I would have said to go to Mobilemods.net and request a unlock pin. I did it on all my Nokia's including my 3650 and it works great. They generate a pin based on your Imei number. Unfotunately the moderator is a jerk...so you REALLY have to be VERY VERY careful not to **** him off or he will ban you. I was banned at one time for supposedly trying to download a program which I have no idea what I would have used it for. Anyway, now the rule is you must make 10 posts before requesting a pin number. Might be worth a try if you are bored and can come up with meaningless posts to get to 10.

If its Nokia, I can unlock it.

Going to make this post more interesting now!

I have Nokia 5160i, something its unlocked of everything. Even when you turn it on, there is the banner text that says "AT&T" that can be changed via a menu on the phone.
Another reason I like this phone is because I can two providers with it. One for good local, one for good roaming. Just have to switch providers via the same unrestricted menu. I just have AT&T for right now.

Everything I have come across on the Intarwebb says that AT&T phones can be unlocked, and Nokia 3650's can be unlocked, but AT&T Nokia 3650's can't. Well, no one has figured out how anyway.

I called Customer service and asked how to unlock it and they told me to go to a store, and the store told me to call customer service.

    ARGHH!!!

My mom has AT&T so I might just give it to her since they arent changing her over for a while

    You're damn right about that.

Just logged on, read the rules, saw that rule 6 was something like 'administrators and moderators are always right'.

I merely suggested that this should be rule 1.

    and this is the reply

Not to sound like a total squode, but what does it mean to "unlock" a cell phone?

Does it mean I can take that one I have lying in the drawer that I got tired of paying $50 a month for and make it work for free?????

It can't be that easy. Say it ain't so, Joe...

It means taking the card that's in it and making it so you can use it with any GSM carrier. Usually phones are locked, not allowing you to use any carrier.

    NO.

Phones are normally locked to a particular network. What unlocking does is allows you use sims from another network if you want.
