Yeah, that always bugged me. It should copy the ones it can, and notify you of the ones it couldn't. I wonder if there's a utility (or ideally, shell extension) that does that.
So, my Micro$haft XP has been driving me up the wall and I need to vent a bit. Heres the deal. I have about 800 files on a hard drive (removable) and I want to transfer them to my pc. Drag and drop, copy and paste, and "send to" all fail stating that a file cannot be tranferred. Each time it stops at a different folder. Anyway, heres my gripe. Just because it cant transfer ONE file, it gives up? WTF! So now I am transferring them, 5 at a time. I also just love how it asks you if you really want to transfer a file, and HANGS until you answer. Why cant it work AROUND that file and proceed to others! Frodo needs to start developing his own O/S. I bet it would rock![]()

I knew there was something like that....
The only real problem I have with Xp is that the goddamn thing restarts AUTOMATICALLY to update. Do you have ANY idea how much it sucks to lose your place in a porn, lose your place in a bunch of stories, AND lose your place in several forums?
Lose your place in porn? What, is it restarting every 2 miutes?Originally Posted by yalborap
You know that's a setting you can adjust, right?
... and if that's the only "real problem" you have with XP consider yourself very lucky!

Well, the only noteworthy problem. I get the occasional annoying bit but it's not worth complaining about.
And I'm good at watching an entire porn and enjoy the longer hentai stuff. Got a problem with that?
Sweet...i will check it out. Seems like the solution for XP is pretty much always 3rd party stuff.Originally Posted by wkolodny

The halting during copying is a big gripe of mine too. The problem is the filesystem that MS "developed" (FAT/NTFS). The whole thing is actively managed by one big table.
The way to fix this would be to use a journaling filesystem, like what Unix/Linux are currently using. Those filesystems store file info in an actual database, and each file is independent of the master table. This means that interrupted move/copy operations resume on errors and such.
The biggest gripe I currently have with MS? This very same journaling filesystem concept was being integrated into Longhorn, along with some other nifty system management tools and structures, that would have really made it worthwhile to use Winders. MS was calling it (you guessed it) MSFS. However, in the midst of all this waffling about the actual release date, MS, in their self-apparent wisdom, has pulled EVERYTHING of value out of the OS. Longhorn now looks to be nothing more than a bloated XP version. We will still all have to deal with the stupid "Are you sure you want to copy this text file from here to there?" prompts. It would be nice if we could disable those stupid verifications like we can with the Recycle Bin notification.
/What the hell do you think I right-click-dragged that folder there for if I wasn't sure about copying it, idiot?!?!

NTFS is a journaling file system though the current version does not log enough information to reverse changes (http://www.backupbook.com/03Freezes_...ournaling.html).
In any case, the hangs up when using the GUI copy have nothing to do with NFTS' lack of full journaling support. There are two likely causes of the copy failure. Either the file in question is in use (with an exclusive lock) and thus cannot be copied, or the copying application (the windows desktop shell in this case) is unable to deal with some abornormal conditions. In the case of external media, a device driver failure is another possibility.
