I'm going thru the same crap with an inspiron 2500. I just replaced the mobo about 6 months ago and its starting to show the same symptoms. This my second 2500 with the same issue. Dell just makes crappy laptops getting a new one is only gonna prolong the problem

and that's why you purchase their complete care warranty. then they replace it completely if it is anything major. you get what you pay for. we have over 3000 desktops in our company, and there are some models plaqued with problems (like the Optiplex GX150 series) and others you don't have a single one (like the GX270s).

that's why Dells are the price they are. they are not the top notebooks/desktops around, nor the worst. Dell always likes to stay in that happy middle area.

then again, i don't get **** from Dell or Dell support. the company I work for does over 750k worth of business with them and I do almost all of the company's purchases with them. if support gives you ****, just exclate it up the chain of responsibility. time is $$.

ok so I guess they are sending out a 1.4ghz P4-M

Is the 1.4ghz P4-M really comparable to a 2.0ghz P4m (first release, before redesign) ? I've been seeing articles that say it's comparable due to the redesign and that they are basically the same speed if not better than the 2.4ghz line.

I've been out of the laptop processor researching since i bought this one, I only upgrade my desktop frequently

I'm not going to go the dick route & say you get what you pay for, b/c that's bull****. You purchased an item that was supposed to work the way it was advertised. Since it didn't & you purchased it direct from Dell, then the should own up & replace it. Damn the man. BTW, IBM laptops are great if you were to purchase another laptop after this...

EDIT: Didn't realize you got it resolved...Good stuff

Are you talking about the P4-M or the Pentium M processor ?

If the new one has a Pentium M processor I personally would take it over the higher speed P4-M processor. If they redesigned the P4-M then I dont remember it since I have not been keeping up on the mobile processors either much.

    I8600C,15.4 IN WUXGA,PMD710(1.4 GHZ)

so I'm assuming that is the Pentium M, I guess if that's better than my P4-M 2.4 that I currently have I'll keep it...

*I* think it is better but my useage may not be the same as yours.

I currently have a I8600 with the WUXGA screen. Check what video card you have in there when you get it. I have the Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo and the laptop is pretty nice.

The only problems I have had
    1. The rubber feet fall off because I put it into and pull it out of my backpack too much.
    2. The painted covers over the metal peices on the bottom of the laptop tend to get hot and the paint will bubble and flake off.

I have not had any overheating issues with mine even when running for days at a time. I can play NFSU2 without problems on my laptop.

My laptop is now almost a year old and I have not had any hardware issues with it.

With the standard battery I can get about 4 hours of usage if I am doing normal usage not playing games or anything heavy duty and the media bay battery adds about an extra 3 hours to that if you got/get that option.

Some people that it is too heavy but I think the 8200 was close to the same?

It only has the 64mb geforce, I would love to have the 128mb ATI, but meh...maybe I'll upgrade that if I keep the laptop.

edit: maybe not! damn part is $300 for that video card, bluetooth is cheap I can add that

and also I use it for coding, mobile gaming, etc... i have a nice desktop that i just ignore (up until the laptop stopped working that is, now i use it a lot) so for using it at home I might not use it much, and I have a work laptop so this might just sit around, heh.. can't decide if i should accept it and keep it or sell it or try for a better system, all i would want that i don't get is the better graphics card, the 2.0ghz, and bluetooth.

yeah I was gonna say when you said they were giving you a laptop that was 1 ghz slower that you were probably gonna get a pentium m. I have an older 1.5ghz pentium m laptop (compaq x1015) and it seems much faster in some things than my 2.66 ghz Sony FRV27. In others, it is a little bit slower....(extracting Rar files, encoding video) All in all, I prefer the pentium M laptop though. It doesn't get nearly as hot as my sony, and the battery life is great. See if you can pay to upgrade to a 2.0ghz pentium m, those things fly.
