I remember downloading VBBS and setting up a bbs on my comuter (did not have a dedicatated phone line so it never really came to be) but I remeber playing tradewars on my own computer for practice and then running whatever update program there was that cycled it to the next day and continueing on for practice!

The larest BBS I remeber in my local area was called the Link and I think it had 5 or 6 lines.

THanks for the memories I had not thought about this in a while.
Hell yeah, I was running on 2400 for the majority of my BBS experience on a 386.

    I remember those days...

I used to run an Emulex/2 BBS in Melbourne, Fl. It was a 'warez site back then (but I was underage and back then trading software wasn't really considered bad). I think the dialup # was 407-259-5286. Heh. Man, what a blast from the past.

My best friend ran a Magicomm (or was it Galacticomm) 16-line BBS (he was the SysOp - heh). We had Murder Motel and a few other cool MUDs. Back then we used to chat just because by definition of "chatting" you had something in common with the people you were "chatting" with.

Thanks for the post - it took me back to some fun memories!

    Kind regards,

I remember when 9600bps was a big thing. I rushed out and spent quite a bit on money on a modem to do 9600bps and then about 3 months later 14.4k was released. As you could guess, I wasn't real happy.
I was also a co-sysop of a board here in sydney. It was mainly an amiga board. I ran the PC side of it. I remember that warez wasn't really a big deal back then cause there wasn't too many people doing it.

    the rest is history
I remember when the world wide web started to get popular. I thought what is this crap. Thats when the board I was involved in shut down and I started playing around with cars more and completly missed the beginning of the internet revolution Think of all the money I could have made

    Good old days.
I ran a 2-line bbs out of my parents basement with 28.8 USR's and a 386SX. LORD was a hit. Ran it on ProBoard. Had all sorts of custom ANSI animated menus...
I remember grabbing up the local computer rag each month and randomly picking board numbers to dial into. Occasionally getting some old lady who answered before her kids computer picked up!

Come to think of it, I still have that old computer sitting in my parents attic. I should plug it in and see if the old girl still runs!

The closest I came was trying to download netscape 4.0 on a 9600bps modem....
Didn't work too well. After about two days Mom needed the phone.

I remember having to use the time bank on a WWIV BBS to save up time to download Wolfenstein 3D.

Ah...fond memories. I miss the days of queueing up a batch download and letting it run all night. Then get up when it dings and seeing what you've got. Remember all those flick files on the Monster BBS CDs? I had (maybe still have, somewhere) dozens of .fli, .fla, and .flc morphs and animations.

Oh, and the .mod music files. How could I forget those.

My first modem was 120 Baud on a C64. When I got a 2400 on my XT, I couldn't believe it. When I finally got a 14400, I thought my hair would catch fire, it was sooo fast!

Did anybody ever see a BBS that used FXterm, a mouse-based GUI interface? It was slow, but pretty. Of course, that was after the glory days of RIPterm.
