Boris (am only singling you out becasue of your safety comment so i can make an example of older cars), i know you may think your car is safe but i wouldn't count on it. Yup, you stand a better chance than a lot of poeople but for example, the previous C-class merc (up to 2000) only had a crash rating of 2 out of 5 as the shell deformed too much and would cause serious leg injuries in a head on crash. The new C-class has 5. The little renault clio has 4! Crash safety and reliability are the two main reasons i want to get a new car. Mine is a '97 with airbags etc and no ABS which i prefer for stopping
power but at the end of the day if your are tired or not paying full attenion then ABS can be a life saver. Getting back to my original point - i would quite happily put money towards a new or newish car for my kids but they have to understand the responsibilty that comes with owning a car as it is a dangerous weapon and a privilege and they have to pay for the running and repairs and insuracne themselves.
