davis449... so... what do you drive?![]()
I'm 23 and I will admit that I have never had to fully pay for my own vehicle. I've had one since I was 16. However, I do pay my fair share of expenses on every car I've ever driven out of my own pocket because I feel it's the least I can do to take some responsibility for my possessions. I make it my policy not to tell anyone what I drive. Even when they do ask I'm very hesitant to say anything (except in car forums cause that's what you're there for: to talk about your car and help others with theirs). I try to keep **** like that to myself, because it shouldn't matter that I drive a nice car. That doesn't mean I don't take pride in what I drive, it's just that people's reactions are always the same. Most people think I'm just a spoiled brat. It took me years to earn the respect of my parents enough for them to trust me with the things they've given me and obviously they think I've earned it. It's like my father said to me after I asked him why in the hell he decided to give me the car I drive now and the car I'm picking up this weekend: "Son...if I didn't think you deserved it, I wouldn't give it to you. I see how hard you work in school and how hard you work at every job you've ever had, whether it was sacking groceries at HEB or satisfying the customers you have today with your small tech business. You have taken care of every car I've given you like you paid for it and I'm not selling this car and taking on another car payment just so you aren't driving a Mercedes."
I've worked since I was old enought to. My parents stop the allowance train, which was nothing to begin with and said get a job the day I turned 16. I bust my *** to earn the money I personally have. I have parents who taught me discipline, self motivation, and respect which is why today I own my own small business that does well while I continue to go to school and get good grades. When I came here to finish school I left my job at the college I was at as well as the clients I had in my home town. I went crazy because I wasn't working, even though my parents said I didn't have to. Every time they bring up quitting my job, I tell them it's not an option. They did this not only because they think my education is more important than working, but also as a test of my motivation to manage my life. So to all of you out there: don't be so quick to judge.
I have the same feelings as the original poster. I see what you all see everyday, and I HATE it when kids don't appreciate what they have, it makes people like me look bad and sticks us with a reputation that's hard to get rid of. I definitely agree with more driver training in this country. I remember when I was 16 thinking a graduated license program was bull****. Now I don't think anyone should have a license until they're 18 and had at least 50 man hours in a car with an instructor. It's amazing how things change.

then i borrowed some cash and brought a new mini, im on my 3rd mini nowi had help off my dad when i had scrapes here and there, but for the most part i paid stuff myself.
but what i dont get, is why do you care if some kid gets a new car? whats it to you? why does it bother you if they dont respect it? i just dont get it. :P
1 more thing. say you were 17 or whatever, and your parents offered you a new 350Z... "no ta, ill get a beat up van." i dont think so.

it's more the problem with kids who get nice cars given to them and then they don't care and they end up being a nuisance and a danger to other road users.
We had a guy at school whos daddy bought him a new 1.1i 106. yeah it wasnt a fast car but he had already been driving round in his dads merc thinking he was amazing and then when he got a brand new car he thought he was super cool - he had the car 20hrs and crashed it into some poor sod when he went out to rag it at morning break. He understeered on some mud on a country lane by school and hit someone head on. Because daddy knew the local head police guy he got away with a telling off and a trip to driving school.
The thing is he didnt learn and then a few months later daddy bought him some white Team Dynamics alloys and then he went round even faster.
I have a friend in Uni who's daddy gave him a Gold tdi 130 - he drives that at over 90 through town - damn irresponsible but at least he is a racing driver so is actually suprisingly safe when it is just him on the road but the fact is its not just him. He then shows a total lack of regard for his car by not looking after it and I get phone calls such as "my oil light has come on what shall i do" or "my brakes are grinding" and then i go round and find he is out of brake pads andf had 4 bald tyres!
well thats not because he had a new car.
i know a guy who turned 17 and crashed his new car (vauxhall corsa) that his dad brought him, hed had the car for less than 2 days.
that doesnt mean to say that if he had a banged up nova hed be a better driver or any less of a menace on the roads?
now his dad gave him his old 95 Landrover discovery. he still cant drive...

Ummm, no!!! Jealousy has nothing to do with what I posted.Originally Posted by 0l33l
My main problem is that little kids do not know how to drive to begin with, regardless of what they drive. Then mommy & daddy give that kid a brand new car to tool around in. I'd say about 80% of these cars are fast, a lot faster than they need to be for a learner. Add the speed of the car, w/ the kid's already inflated attitude, and feeling of immortality and that just leads to trouble. Also, these kids are the same brats that feel they are owed every little thing, thus they do not appreciate what they have or care that there parents gave them an expensive gift like that.
So, there was no jealousy involved in my post. What set me off was some dumbass kid, claiming that he didn't care what happened to his car, b/c his parents bought it. Granted, it was a 2004 Hyundai (which is definitely not something to be envied), but the fact remained that it was bought for him & he showed no sense of appreciation toward what he had received. Then on my way to school/work I see all these tools in new BMW's, Infiniti's, Audi's and such that are no more then 18/19yrs old and who CANNOT drive at all.
It just makes sense that you give a brand new driver something safe, but something that can take damage. Giving them a brand new car when they cannot drive is a big mistake. However, I still think that this country wouldn't have raised an assload of pussies if parents were allowed to hit their children when needed w/o the specter of Child Portective Services looming in the background.
