I got 55k school debt, but I'll worry about that when I need to start paying it off. 6 months after I grad. lol
congrats man. Dave Ramsey Cultists unite!! I have about 15K left (all student loans) down from 23K!!!!
I know how you (and everyone) feel about spending money just because you can afford it at the time....I just got a promotion at work (nearly doubled my income!) so I'm really struggling with not spending it all and laying it down on those loans....
Interesting read, I have a friend whos gotten herself into a similar situation, her blog post is here: http://the-d.blogspot.com/2005/06/plastic-meltdown.html
My old man always said to me never buy anything unless you have the cash to pay for it, so ive never really been in great debt, but I did go without things and made sacrifices.
On the flipside we just bought a house and owe the bank a quarter of a mill...
Keep up your repayments mate, and best of luck.

I recently lost job and had no savings and maxed out cards as I had just spent on the summer hols / new pc bits etc my biggest earning time was autumn/winter so had no worries.
Then no job.
So I then had worries and phoned capital one, told them and said what about my payment protection........
Have you filed all the tax returns they asked.........err........
b@5t@rds.
So I only owe about 1k to cap1, .6k to citi and .7k to citi on wifes card, but NONE of them would hold the accounts or stop the interest while I got another job etc.
But after 6 months today I get offered a job start on monday, start at 07:20, finish at 17:30 with a 30 minute lunch break.
Cleaning the tools in a busy tool hire shop, really minimum wage, will pay about 200ukp a week, rent is 65, 10 or so 'council tax', be lucky to have about 100 left with odd bits of expenses........
My other options were tobacco baron or drug dealer, both of which paid more.....(or back to being a cab driver if I can find a good vehicle and 500 for paperwork)
hell yes ... think you can break 20k by the end of the year? that would bring you to over $14k in debt reduction in one year, which would be amazing considering your setbacks.
lez ... that sounds pretty crappy. maybe you should move to america. we pay our landscapers $12 an hour (minimum wage is $5.25) ... often untaxed since they're mostly here illegaly. Hell you can make $9/hr working at McDonalds.
