Question Treo 650... is it worth it? Anyone have one?

Was just curious if anyone on here had a Treo 650...
I keep seeing them on tv and they look so juicy

My bro-in-law has his own cellphone business... mainly installing car kits, but
he can get it for me for $262 bucks on Cingular.... and that rules!

So I've read all the reviews that praise it, but have never talked to anyone
    that actually owned/used one.

    Any input is appreciated!!!

(btw.. I currently have a SE T616 that I love!.. was gonna get the s710a,
but it's the same price as the Treo! and it's not a smartphone!)

I just got one, but Im returning it tomorrow. I wanted a bluetooth phone that I could use for PhoneControl, but it doesnt have all the bluetooth components I need to make it work. Very disappointing to find this phone does not come with bluetooth dialup networking, or any other bluetooth components other than hotsyncing - doesnt seem like you can use bluetooth 3rd party applications for the PC to interact with the phone.

There are alot of mixed feelings about the phone. For one, its got roughly 24MB of internal storage, which totally sucks. Palm is giving free 128MB SD cards to people who buy them to compensate. Others say there are bugs that cause them to have to do alot of soft resets.

Im not used to it yet, but its a pain to use when driving. Also, when Im in a call, my face hits the touchscreen and presses buttons. It causes problems when Im checknig voicemail. Very annoying. The speakerphone is a joke. Its barely loud enough to hear.

The web browser is sweet. You can view full html pages! The camera is great, very good quality at low light.

For the $599 pricetag, i dont think its worth it.

Wow.. $599? did you buy the unlocked version or what? Without a contract it's only $512 here...

Sucks to hear your having some probs... You can turn on DUN with a hack a guy has released...

And the soft resets I heard were from the stores not upgrading the SIM card to the newer
    ones that worked properly.

Also, I know you can use bluetooth headsets with a Treo, so it should work with PhoneControl somehow.

Hmm.. I guess I gotta go do more research.. I was gonna have him order it Monday...
Maybe you can solve some of your probs by doing some reading over at Treonauts

    Thanks for your input!!

There is supposed to be an official DUN patch soon. I've used the Treo 600 a lot, I really like the 600, the 650 sounds great to me.

I like the 650, dont get me wrong. Im just aggrivated that im having trouble with the bluetooth. Nobody seems to want to answer my questions in my other thread

Im starting to have second thoughts about the returning the phone. I just put nintendo and pocketunes on it...its so sick to be able to stream shoutcast thru the phone and play super mario bros...haha

i paid $449 for my phone after rebate. I have another week to think about it. hopefully I can get phonecontrol working...

Heh.. now I'm getting all excited about it again... cool...
Was just browsing thru the TreoCentral forums, and even tho there are probs, they
all say they would buy the phone again... Methinks I'm gonna go for it

Frodo, you wanna port over to run on a Treo 650? heh.. that'd be cool...

    i still have my phone

decided to keep it, figured out a bunch of mysteries. I just got my phone to connect to my LAN at home and use my DSL connection instead of using PCS Vision. Its sweet. I can sit on the can and surf full speed now!!

I would like to figure out how to use my BT dongle/carputer as a wireless headset. My phone isnt seeing it as an available headset device.

Cool... care to elaborate on some of the mysteries you solved??

How are you connecting to a Lan with it? a SDIO card WiFi?

I had my bro-in-law order my Treo last Wed but it's out of stock
I went to the mall yesterday and poked at the one in the Cingular store.. heh...

They said it should be in this week sometime.. keeping my fingers crossed!

    I've got one on Cingular.

It's not the unlocked version, but I found the unlock code and it seemed to work... Although I haven't tested it on another network so we'll see.

I also installed the UNofficial DUN patch and it sort of works. Reliably??? Well, let's just say I haven't needed it enough to waste my time trying to get it working right. You can't have DUN installed and use the built in browser at the same time.

As for PhoneControl, I purchased the full version in hopes that it will work, but alas... it doesn't as of yet. I'm optimistic that it will either work eventually, or I'll get a new phone that is compatible.

As for the phone/pda. If you like Palm and want an OK phone, it does the integration fairly well. I'm actually a pocketpc kind fo guy but I thought I'd give it a try and see what all the Treo hype is about. It's only a matter of weeks until something better comes along, though.

    Good luck.
